Slim The Mobster says Dr Dre deserves a break, isn't too concerned with high-profile features

'He gave us Eminem and 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Game ... let the man have fun,' War Music rapper tells 'RapFix Live.'

Dr. Dre made waves last week when he said he was ready to take "a little bit of a break" from music after he finishes working with Kendrick Lamar and Slim the Mobster.

When Slim appeared on "RapFix Live" Wednesday, the Aftermath rapper said, "For the past time that I've been around, I know for a fact that [Dre] hasn't been out the studio long. Let him have a break.

"He gave us Eminem and 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Game, he gave us so many different things in his time. There are some rappers who haven't gave us nothing. So, let the man have fun now."

At the opening of the Beats by Dre pop-up store in Manhattan, New York, the hip-hop icon told Fader TV, "I've been working on music for 27 years now, and the longest I've ever been out of the studio in 27 years has been two weeks. I'm never gonna stop music — it's like air to me. I'm gonna take a little bit of a break, enjoy some time with the family."

But can we at least get Detox before he goes? "I'm hoping," said Slim, who recently released his War Music mixtape. "That's what we're shooting for, right?"

Several years in the making, there hasn't been a hip-hop album shrouded in as much mystery as Dre's third solo affair. Even Slim, who is in the Doc's camp, isn't sure which songs will make the final track list, though he has heard several, including a song with Jay-Z and another with Drake.

"It's a process, so I don't even know what songs are really on the album and what songs aren't on the album," Slim said, before noting that, ultimately, Dre isn't too concerned with high-profile features. "He's picky; he don't care about that name stuff. It's gotta be appeasing to him and what he likes."

  1. If Dre is not going to take a break till after detox is done with. and then do albums for kendrick and slim. Probably work on Em's next album and the game (i hope). Snoop will want a beat or two for his help so. It could be a while before Dre takes a brake

  5. @ the first comment. Dre has recorded around 400 songs for the Detox project. wouldn't he just throwaway beats to people like he did for game/snoop/every rapper back in '05?

  6. I say Dre take all the time you need. I sat down today and just listened to the chronic 2001, I did nothing else but focus on the music. And it was great to listen to every single sound in each song and to really appreciate it. You can't do that with today's music. If Dre is just going to make more of the bullshit that's on the streets today, then the album is not worth putting out. That's why I encourage Dre to wait until he has something to put out that will truly stand the test of time

  7. honestly they say dr dre is a hard worker, i mean he has only produced relapse and a few songs here and there, not much work ethic if you ask me

  11. You guys need to listen Kanye West. I can definetely agree that comment few posts above, that said todays hip-hop industry sucks. It really does. Kanye is one of the few producers who makes listenebly, quality music. His soloworks are classics and all those beats he gave to Jigga, Common, Game, Lil Wayne, Drake and others. I mean I used to hate Lil Wayne (and I still do), but those songs that Kanye produced on Tha Carter 3 made me listen to him.

I used to respect Dre as a producer, but this bullshit what comes out.... I've lost my respect to him. Nothing in few years and that fucked up corny, poppy INAD made me to loose respect. Of course I hope that Dre suprieses me and will come out with the classic record, but don't you guys just wait. If it comes out, it comes out. Listen to music that we have now.

  12. people might not like this, but i think that slim the mobster's "mixtape" is better than both game's and 50 cent's last 2 "albums". The reason for their first 2 albums being hot was beacause dre was heavily involved. (although game's second album has nothing from dre, but it was mostly about him) Now, people are hating on slim for one or more of those reasons:

1- they think he is nothing special and that his songs are the same played out gangsta shit, (which is still better than most of todays gay rap, techno or soft rnb love shit).

2- jelous because months ago he was just like one of them or probably worse, and now hes rich although he didn't do anything really that big (except writing most of what could have been detox and working with dre in general).

3- mad because bishop lamont was better and now slim sounds like a "weaker" replacement, although bishop was in aftermath for years and made alot of mixtapes and worked alot with dre and had alot of songs that are produce by dre. (I cant disagree on bishop being better, but no one is comparing and slim is not actually in a state to be compared to otheres yet).

Finally, just give the guy a break, dont feel jelous, dont be mad, and dont hate..aprreciate.

  15. Look at it from a business perspective. Iovine is executive producing Detox with Dr. Dre. I can't even imagine the amount of big checks written all over the place on and off within a decade just for the contributions and sessions to make this album and Interscope is counting on it. Everyone who has written or thrown beats at Dre for it has gotten paid well. It's promised to their investors to be a big bump for whatever quarter it's out. You don't think Interscope has been putting the money and time into it? Sure, Dre has free will and his own high-profile boutique label with a big brand selling big-selling names, but Interscope and Iovine are interested in making money. Putting out Detox is ultimately up to Dre but apparently if Iovine has enough influence to tell Dre he has to restart Detox when he turned it in because it wasn't "up-tempo" enough, then he has the influence to convince him to put it out. Detox can only make money at this point and help the Beats brand tremendously. It's coming (eventually). It's way past the point of no return to shelve it.

Just saying don't freak out about this break thing, Dre is just looking ahead and saying these are his last two guys he's promising before he gets to enjoy his life outside the studio for once. I can't imagine anyone more constantly in-demand than Dre. We're gonna first hear K.dot and Slim on these beats on Detox and Dre is going to mentor and guide these guys on their own paths like Game or 50.

For all we know Dre is saying this out loud because Detox may actually be finishing up and it's hush-hush like it's always been. Everyone is asked about Detox but they always give bullshit answers because they're not allowed to give details to anything. If something leaks, Dre doesn't fuck with it. If something is old, Dre doesn't fuck with it. If you think nothing is happening because you don't see or hear it, Dre is still fucking with Detox.

  16. that's a big assumption plugin, but agreeable i suppose...

  17. Maybe Dre doesn't let us know when exactly he gonna take that break on purpose. It got the internet talking about Detox a lot. Maybe he sees this as a first step of promo. To upset the fans first n then come out of his shelf.

    But yeah maybe maybe maybe...

  18. I'm just guessing but I've observed and been on Detox for years upon years out of habit so I like to feel I can connect some shit and history together to make sense of the present. I really don't know anything for sure so anything is possible, personally I just don't see Detox being shelved, and Dre opening up about the future in a way to say he's finally ready to take time off after this or that is significant if you want to speculate between the lines.

I could be completely full of shit but I actually do think there's something in guessing Dre may actually be circling around Detox a bit tighter this time in seeing his future plans before he takes his time off. He has the material, it's just up to him to put it out, and maybe the big success of Beats has encouraged him to finally do it. You never know.

  19. plugin i always enjoy your analysis, however i still dont believe its gonna be released

  20. It's come close before and every somewhat credible vet near Dre has said up and down for years he's been working on it on and off but he's been on that shit and it's the #1 priority at Aftermath according to Khalil. It's not a secret Dre turned in Detox a long time ago but Iovine turned it down because it lacked enough uptempo songs, Snoop said Detox was "done" in June 2008, and then Slim the Mobster said Detox was "done" in late 2009 when Interscope hinted at that February '11 release date. The shit exists and Dre/Iovine (both executive producing) have every reason and financial motive to put it out. Dre is just about perfection, laziness, and he's in no rush to put out his last album ever if it's not exactly everything he wants it to be.

It also isn't as if he's saved all the songs from 2002-2003 (whenever he began actual sessions for it) to use for it now. Dre has said he doesn't fuck with leaks or old shit and I'm sure he's been lacking inspiration and creative concepts here and there. If 2012 isn't the year of Detox, then I'm feeling you on it not being released - but this point shelving it makes less sense.

You can never say it'll never come out because the material is there, it's hot, and logically Interscope, for all the big checks written to produce it for so long for contributors, engineers, staff, features, everything, and logically for Dre/Iovine as they both own Detox and Beats, they have every reason in the world to release it. It just hasn't for a lot of reasons but you can imagine someone like Dre is much more comfortable "working on it", comforted that he can still perfect perfection, than turning in the last record that defines his career and the last chance he has to really do it again. Perfection is a fucked up concept, especially with Dre's habits and standards, but I think if we go into 2012 for the first or second quarter with NOTHING, especially nearing the 20th anniversary of The Chronic, then you know something is fucked. But Dre has all the time in the world to do his thing and he uses it, it doesn't mean it'll never come out. It's really just up to Dre but there's no real reason why he doesn't want to get it done and put it out. Like I said, he has every reason to put it out, even if it's later than sooner.

  21. Lol plugin you just said the exact same things as in your previous post but in an other way.

  22. How do you know iovine said its not "up tempo" enough? that just sounds like bs speculation.

  23. Plugin. I have been reading your stuff for a long time. This month is when I think you have become the writer of the biggest analysis comments of just about every post. I respect it, you know your stuff. But this, what your posting now, is all speculation and kind of running circles around what you imagine could be happening. Still loads of respect.

As for Dre, No one knows what is happening, and why I keep on coming back to this blog everyday, I don't know. Thank you Uzee for keeping this stuff coming. Not loosing hope just yet.

  24. I actually agree....plugin has been a solid contributor but as of late his material has been going in circles....

Hey how bout some of the other stallwarts contribute their opinions? Cosmic, JMac, Bwash, where the hell have u guys been..?

  26. Appreciate the compliments but everyone is right and that's still cool. Don't take what I ramble as gospel, I'm still nobody on the internet, but recognize speculation for what it is and history for what you can go check yourself. I change my mind about shit too and can only say so much about shit I don't actually know.

Sometimes I'm up at 4AM or something a bit fucked up so take the longwinded bullshit paragraphs as they are too and forgive me for the circling lol. Love this blog, wish the other contributors would come back, but I'm feeling everyone on here (mostly) and the insight. Hope you guys had a good holiday, it's nice to get out of Oakland for at least a day damn...

  28. I wish that "S" would shut his mouth! All he does is go on this blog announcing random dates. What happend to "young world" that "S" predicted last week.... he is full of BS. There is no doubt that Dre has been working hard and does deserve a break. However, all this hard work has been on Detox. He has been consitantly working on the "Detox project" for years and him announcing that he is taking a break can be used as an indication that detox is nearly complete. Not many people have mentioned what Xzibit said about the Detox intro being complete. This is also an indication that Dre has got the tracks he wants and is ready to drop. Detox will be here by 2012!!
