Dr Dre Says After 27 Years Of Working On Music He's Taking A Break

Dr. Dre ready for a break from music, wants Beats By Dre to become second only to Apple.

After almost three decades of non-stop contributions to music, producer/rapper Dr. Dre says he’s finally ready for a break from music. Dr. Dre revealed the news during an interview with The Fader at the opening of the Beats By Dre store in SoHo.

Dr. Dre explained that when he’s done working with Kendrick Lamar and Slim Da Mobster he’ll be ready for a break which will consist of spending more time with his family.

“These are the next two artists I’m working on, Slim Da Mobster and Kendrick Lamar. I think that’s when I’m gonna just wrap it up for a minute because I’ve been working on music for 27 years now and the longest I’ve ever been out of the studio in 27 years has been two weeks,” Dr. Dre explained. “So yea I feel like I’m gonna take a little bit of a break. I’m never gonna stop music, it’s like air to me. So I’mma take a little bit of a break. Enjoy some time with the family til I get that itch to get back in.”

Aside from working on music Dr. Dre has contributed heavily to the Beats By Dre line of headphones and says they won’t stop until they’ve become second only to Apple.

“I’m shocked myself as to how well they’re doing. We’re gonna keep new and exciting product coming. We’re trying to eventually be second to Apple. And I don’t think that’s a bad position,” said Dr. Dre. “We’re really trying to take over everything with a speaker. And also microphones. We’re gonna get involved in that also.”

There were no mentions of a Detox release during Dr. Dre’s interview with The Fader.

  2. Uzee I think its time for you to shut down this blog. Detox ain't comin, I'm devastated but got to accept it! Been following Detox news since 04 and I think the lack of annoucements etc shows its obvious theres no album. Dre is either not happy with the music made for it or he hasn't got the passion and drive for a solo project. Great work on the blog though man, but as a daily follower on here......I'm outty!! Just got Kendrick to look forward to now, so start up a new blog for his album plz!!

  3. lamo - he aint sayin he takin a break now. He means after detox etc...no need to state the obvious as fans would know lol.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yeah, sorry to say but it looks like he gave up on Detox and his fans. Sounds like hes gonna divide up all of this work done and put it into other peoples projects because he knows he will never meet the expections for mythical Detox

    ReplyDelete
  5. ^^ BULL CRAP

this is not the 1st time he has talked about takin a break or changing direction.

He means taking a break after detox and other projects.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Exactly my point Uzee.. this is not the first time hes talked about changing direction. I think hes realized that hes never going to meet his fans expections with Detox. Even tho he may have thought he was going the right direction several times now, especially this last time, but its never going to be perfect enough to slap his own name on it. Therefore, a lot of this material will just be dived up to his own artist shit... which it sounds like hes accepted now. He would have mentioned Detox if he was actually serious about putting it out

    ReplyDelete
  7. ^^i think i wasnt clear with 'changing direction'

what i meant was that he wants to try other things after detox and other hiphop/rap projects. As in broaden himself, scoring for movies and other stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  8. hey man real talk he's saying he's been working for 27 years and he wants time off with the family for real man thats some dedication after your son has died and everything how long will he take off i really don't know but lets hope massive amounts of the material he has recorded leaks out since he's not gonna put it out and Uzee i dig what u r saying about the whole changing direction thing like he said with the planets and stuff but honestly if he's worked so hard on detox and im not sitting here jamming hard to it after 12 years imagine how long it would take for him to broaden his horizons to other stuff i mean the man is a beast at production and is responsible for so much awesome music but i think he's pretty close to hanging it up lets hope we get some leaks or hopefully a Detox soon

    ReplyDelete
  9. ya i agree with uzee. he was saying he was going to take a break after he works with kendrick and slim.. and i was under the impression that he was going to work with those two after detox. He previously stated that slim and kendrick were the last two artists he was going to work with... so I don't think there are any real news here.

    ReplyDelete
  10. If Detox was near, dont u think he would have stated the obvious? How dillusional are all you guys? Is this blog that important to you Uzee that you keep denying the obvious.....this shit is never coming out. Year after year, excuse after excuse nobody can say they arent getting tired of this....Dre is a beast of a producer? Produced what? 2 albums in the last how many years?

This shit is becoming comical....How many of you can keep holding onto this dream is just beyond me..HE CANT MEET EXPECTATIONS WITH THIS ONE. Therefore it isnt coming out. I have been following this blog since the beginning but enough is enough...its the same shit week after week, month after month, year after year. If you really cared about your fans which he dosent, then put something, anything, out. The constant delays, the dropped talent over the years and the Beats excuses are old and tiresome. I will always support Dre and his OLD music but all this repetitive nonsense makes me angry.

PUT WHAT YOU HAVE TOGETHER AND PUT IT OUT.

    JMac

    ReplyDelete
  11. ^ya i feel ya man. I can tell that this whole process is full of repetitive bullshit.. and I have only been following for about 3/4s of a year. But i think its unrealistic to say he will not come out with an album just because he cant meet the expectations. There is too much money on the table for him not to at least put something out at some point.

  12. Uh oh.....this is not good...

Duwaun Parker on twitter said that Detox likely to be shelved....follow his tweets....not good people.

What a collosal waste of time...

  13. I respect that 110% But whats going to happen to "the planets" instermental album? What's going to happen to the nwa movie. It's really Sad detox is going to be his last album I wish "the plants" will drop almost right before detox. I'm going to miss dre he's a what legend in music and hip hip hop. :(

  15. Can't u see what Dre is doin? He's just fuckin with all ya'll. Whether Detox comes out or not, he's still good at what he does. And I bet all this guys that r talking shit about him are gonna be the first guys to buy Detox when it comes out. Stop been obsessed about Detox and just cherish and love what Dre is doing musically.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Don't listen to anyone that is cocksure detox isn't coming out. same goes for anyone who is sure that is. Take Dre's comments for what they are--an indication that he is taking a break...clearly things aren't going as planned, he is selling headphones for hundreds of millions and i'm sure he wants to put his full efforts into the beats line. Nobody knows what is going to happen in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  17. dr dre goin out with a big bang??

    ReplyDelete
  18. Dr dre has always put to much pressure on him self to make detox perfect and after all the time and money spent on it i think it will still drop but you can understand the man needs a break but if it don't come next year it should never come out. i was 16 when 2001 come out. was then and still is now the best album i have heard but i will be nearly 30 next year and my 12 yo son and his friends don't know who Dr Dre is so IF it don't drop next year it should stay a myth

    ReplyDelete
  19. like the other poster said, uzee you are delusional, its not coming out.....

what makes you think it is anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  20. i didn't see the tweet about detox being shelved, can the one who wrote the comment about it give me the link?

    ReplyDelete
  21. ^^i've been looking for it but there is no comment about it from him.

    Unless sum1 else finds it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Lay off uzee he puts this blog up so we can keep in touch with detox. it not his fault its not come out yet why look for detox news if all you do is hate.

    ReplyDelete
  23. ^because it takes forever for dre to drop detox >>

we are not the one to blame if we hate ..
blame dre and his lazy ass for not droping it 10 years ago

    ReplyDelete
  24. im not blaming uzee you moron im just stating that i think he is delusional if he thinks its coming out now after hearing this interview, granted before this statement from dre i thought we would see it either at xmas/2012

now i know its not happening, those records are gonna be on slim and K albums.....

    ReplyDelete
  25. ^but u still keep coming back to this blog because u can't let it go its people like you [hates] the reason Dre hasn't finished detox because it will not be good enough for you why don't you find a blog about young money and talk about the shit that comes out of their every few months instead of waiting for a classic.

    ReplyDelete
  26. you are an idiot....
    young money GTFOH

    ReplyDelete
  27. haha two days ago we were talking about a new dre track and now we are talking about no detox. Peole shouldnt hate snoop xibit and DOC all say its coming so believe!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am assuming since DOC and kendrick Lamar said detox is being mixed now dat he didn't mention it because it's finished .and now he is saying he is doing those two more albums and taking a break

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hella people overreacting and freaking out, and here we go again with "DETOX ISN'T COMING SEE I TOLD U" and "DRE LEAVING US" shit by people who choose not to read the articles they claim are proof of their frustrations.

It just says Dr. Dre is taking a break from music *~AFTER~* he's done stepping up Kendrick and Slim like he did with Game, Eminem. If any of you retards understand what a timeline is, you can make one and see that comes *~AFTER~* Detox is pushed out as it will presumably be those two artists' big mainstream push by Dre. Dre has been working non-stop for almost 30 years, especially on Detox (on and off) for 8 years and everyone else in between. Even for albums that never came out. As a family man pushing 50-years-old, Detox, Kendrick, and Slim would be the biggest bang to end a career. Then he'll come back. Dre is going to be like Quincy Jones who made his best albums after 50-years-old.

I can't wait until Detox does come, even if it's another year from now, just so these delusional bitches will just shut up with the "Detox ain't comin'!" nonsense. It would be nice if Dre gave us updates but he doesn't work that way, and if he's not stepping out of the shadows to do anything but promo for his Beats brand, it probably means he's spending all his time getting Detox out. Dre wants Detox out for many reasons. He promised it, it will boost his Beats brand astronomically, and he wants to end his trilogy with the most advanced, best hip-hop album to bring back the WC. Dre has probably a thousand songs and you think he isn't putting out Detox? No, he's not putting out Detox until it's absolutely perfect, and Dre has all the time in the world to do it.

Get over it, don't give Uzee shit because Dre isn't giving you constant updates like the Weather Channel, and learn to get upset over other shit besides a Dr. Dre album. Any fans like myself who've followed it for 7-8 years should know Detox exists because it's existed before multiple times.

How can you say it doesn't exist if he has so much material (much of it hot), everyone around him over the years has said the shit he has is mind-blowing, and you saw Snoop's videos of all the hot WC producers working on shit to submit to him? It's not about existing, it's about whether Dre wants to release it, and everyone knows (and says) Dre is not going to release it until it's up to the level of perfection he demands like he demands from anything. It isn't easy to craft the perfect hip-hop album when there are so many ways to go, things change, trends change, and nail down every concept, lyric, mixing, etc. Detox is "done" technically, but what isn't done is how Dre wants to put it together and touch it up. Relax and go listen to something else, I'd rather be patient after all these years and expect a Dre-level perfect album than less than that just so I can have it now. They're working on it, they've been working on it, Snoop and DOC are leading the charge (which is a blessing), and it's not coming until it's 100%.

I also would lay off that it's in final mixing because Kendrick was asked and responded they're "mixing it". They're always mixing shit for Detox, it has endless material, but he didn't come out on his own and say they're in final mixing. He was asked and gave a bullshit answer because Dre doesn't allow anyone to really talk about it in detail and they probably don't know shit anyway.

  30. ^one of the best posts yet. 100% agree with you

  32. Detox coming soon

    Slim

    ReplyDelete
  33. Im pretty sure Uzee didnt say that. Besides everyone calm down the album will be here by February.

I know a guy from shady records and he said its nearly if not completed.

    Mac

    ReplyDelete
  34. ya i think everyone needs to calm down.. maybe even take a break from this blog for awhile. we all know that if this album is going to come out, it's not going to be this year. So there is no point in stressing out about it right now. That is what I am doing at least...

    ReplyDelete
  35. He could be saying he is going to take a break when hes done working with Kendrick and Slim. If he just stops, Kendrick and Slim arent just going to wait for him to get that 'itch' and dre knows that. as far as detox, the way i see it, its a business. so many people put time money and effort into this investment that the Board of Directors iovine or even dre for that matter, would not even think of scrapping it. its too much money on the line and they want to maximize their return.

as far as his beats, i say its too early to judge because we never actually heard detox beats. the dude still has it, like relapse, musically i think was great. kush was a leak and so was inad. die hard has that pump up vibe, and hey young world has that classic simple beat that we all love. i do honestly think that hes more of a composer than a producer. he puts together ideas and sounds and puts it together, which is why he has khalil, d-park, batson, and elizondo to provide him with ideas. by people leaving makes it harder for him to find ideas. also, i think that because of what the market holds today as us consumers, it makes it even harder for him to make detox. everyone now is kind of into that dubstep house music, which is why we heard under pressure, inad, and a bit of kush. he wants everyones interest and not only die hard dre fans. most people now dont know who dre is.

all in all my bad to ramble on but i think it will see the light of day. its good to hear doc and snoop are leading it. i can say that i have as much of a drive to want detox as well. i visit this blog daily wen i have time, but im not complaining about it and saying fuck dre. i know wen it comes out every hater will be on his tip. you guys just need to relax. its not like our lives depend on it

    ReplyDelete
  36. i cant believe how delusional you guys are..there is no money in records anymore, dre, iovine and the board all know this.....

    ReplyDelete
  37. btw just because some people say they dont think its coming out, doesnt mean they are "hating" on dre, its a valid opinion, after all this is a discussion board, both sides of the argument need to be heard, some fools on this board need to go back to school...ignorant twats

    ReplyDelete
  38. ^sorry didn't know it was a spelling test and it is hating if people start saying fuck dre and just saying stupid shit about detox. And to the one who is trying to pass him self off as uzee don't be a twat he will just delete your post

    ReplyDelete
  39. My intuition tells me the hold-up on detox really isn't about the lack of money in records in today's economy. Dre is making an effort to
adapt his style to a new generation of youth and it really doesn't seem to be working for him. Rap is really the 'youth music' of today...Dre is struggling to adjust to the times (and the fact that creative music takes a backseat to garbage that all exhibit the common characteristics of radio-play rap). The pressure is probably really eating at Dre and he's just not feeling his material.

    ReplyDelete
  40. ^ The most logical thing expressed on this site in a while. It certainly seems to be the hold-up. Even the people we know around Dre and the Detox material will easily tell you he has all the hottest material in the world but actually seeing him release it is another question. Dre is known to be very self-conscious about his shit and actually finalizing Detox must be a big, pressured step for Dre. I think he's come close before but when you're that nuts about perfection, you suddenly hear all the flaws that can be fixed just before you turn it in, and that shit cycles over and over.

If Dre didn't commit to this being his very last album I think it would've been out by now. Dre wants to please everyone and wants this album to be the best of the best. He's tried a lot of things with a lot of people to get it done. He's was fucking with Alex da Kid and all these other pop guys to adapt their appeal and that output (INAD) just didn't work. A lot of people seem to be gone (Mel-Man, Elizondo, Batson, etc.) and they're the ones that defined the signature Aftermath sound. Dre needs ideas, he doesn't make them, but he turns them into gold. If the first step's been missing, that's why you've seen Dre enlist help from EVERYONE to see if he can blend and create that new perfect shit he's been searching for.

BTW to the people who claim CD's don't sell so Dre has no financial reason to give a shit about Detox, think again and learn something. CD revenue goes to the executive producers and the label. Most artists get their shit paid for and produced by the label they're signed on, which means someone else invested the money in the artist, and expects it to sell to get that money back and a profit. The artist usually makes their big money selling live tickets and the merchandise at the shows. Guess who is executive producing Detox? Dre and Jimmy. They make the bulk of the revenue and for all the resources, time, and dependability Interscope investors expect from Detox (this is their golden egg that skyrockets the quarterly bottom line when it comes) insures it's coming. I'm sure his Aftermath-Interscope distribution contracts are signed that way.

Not to mention Detox will be a huge album, one that is rare these days, and the promotion for Beats will be tied-in and huge too. Dre has every financial interest to get it out, and Jimmy Iovine has an equal interest too.

    ReplyDelete
  41. “If there is a Detox, then Game is on it more than once. But if it never comes out, then nobody’s on it,” he said to Kiss 107.5′s Jay Thomas-This was foreshadowing that something isn't right with Dre and detox...Dre isn't happy with it and there's nothing pushing him to put it out. In fact Dre getting huge media attention for Detox and smoking blunts and smacking hoes is probably not good publicity for beats which is a G-rated brand. Detox is Dead. Case Closed

    ReplyDelete
  42. ^ Everyone knows Dre is super strict when it comes to publicly talking about Detox. You ask questions to Game, Kendrick, or anyone else, you get bullshit answers trolling the fuck out of you. Realize all these Aftermath-affiliated guys get asked about it constantly, at some point they're just going to play with you because they know they can't speak details. Game told an interviewer before "you can't ask about Detox because you don't know a thing about it" (or something like it). It doesn't foreshadow shit except people's gullibility.

Just because you don't hear or see the progress on Detox doesn't mean it doesn't exist. There was a time in '08 and '09 we would get leaks, even the Dr. Pepper snippet, all the way up to the leaks in late '10, and everyone was on the bandwagon. Since then they've probably caught who was doing it or fixed the issue and you've seen nothing since.

We got a video of Dre showing off Hey Young World with a crowded ass studio and Dre so excited he's moving to it, didn't we? Snoop and DOC are gathering producers to get to work on it. It exists. There's more scorching material than you can imagine. Is Dre going to release it? Nobody knows the whole story, some people just know parts of it, and that's the best way to keep a secret. We can speculate all day with halfway believable ideas but in the end it could be anything, but I'm probably going to believe Dre won't commit to shit until he thinks it's 100% flawless. It's not interesting or exciting to believe it's just repetitive all-day studio sessions and mixing but that's probably the truth. It's also not very appealing to hear but maybe Dre needs a good vacation NOW, a few months away from the studio, and can come back hungry. He's not taken a break for longer than 2 weeks for 27 year and that will knife fuck anyone's head and creative output.

Did anyone think for one second that Detox may actually be close to completion before using this article as proof he's "quitting" it? He could be saying K.dot and Slim are his last projects before he takes a much-deserved break because he's already looking ahead of Detox. Maybe that's even why no interviewer is allowed to mention Detox anymore? Nobody knows so just keep an open mind and do other shit in the meantime. 2012 is probably the year and if not, then even I'll say fuck it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Plugin nice shit as usual. You Bwash, Cosmic, and JMac have been the best posters on here for awhile. That being said I believe that Detox is near. Its been too long and it has to be coming soon. Am i dillusional also? I dunno mabye but too many signs point to it being near....i do know this, i read the duwaun parker tweets and ill tell u this, when he about the unicorn album im confused about what hes actually getting at. Any insight would be great.

Thanks for all the consistent contributors.

    JJ

    ReplyDelete
  44. I really appreciate it but those dudes are better posters than I can be, and I wish they hung around more. I don't blame them for taking a break since nothing happens but it's all good. I hope they come back when things finally pick up and the doubters can stop festering here.

I ramble way too much compared to JMac, Bwash, and Drefan but it's a habit I can't break, but I just want to jump-start some discussions so we can have some nice fan back and forth debating rather than having to put know-nothings or phonies purposely spreading false rumors (like S) in check. I've followed and loved the idea of Detox for a long time and it's fascinating to me. His flawless production and mixing style blows me away so I'll always hang onto that even if the rest of hip-hop is garbage. I shit on Dre for things but I'm loyal to believing he's taken that much shit knowing he'll be vindicated in the end for a reason.

Detox has been "complete" in a technical sense a handful of times but sometimes you can't get to 100% with what you have even if it surpasses everything else out there. Dre needs faith in himself and where he can musically evolve before he'll put it out and even then it has to be "perfect". It's a lot easier to see all the flaws in your own work just before you turn it in when you have infinite control over something that will define your legacy and whether or not it comes first or second to his Beats brand, Dre wants Detox out and he wants it to blow up to the next level more than anybody. It's a human thing and Dre is human, people just gotta let the legend be the legend and enjoy it for what it is looking forward that sooner or later it's gonna be transcend into something that makes us rethink how music and hip-hop can be done.

  46. @plugin, i agree man but we need DETOX now!!! oh and btw dre's production has gone DOWNHILL since 2006, hasnt done decent beats since Games first album

    ReplyDelete
  47. @Chow Trying sir, everyone who knows me knows that's just how I do it and I almost feel like a lecturing scholar on Detox now, shit...

@Anon I don't really believe if Dre has really produced anything since '06, at least not since '08 or '09. Khalil has been Dre's man for a while now. You have Relapse and Recovery but those are made specifically for and with Em who himself has taken a big step to run his own productions anyway. Dre has just been buying beats, writing checks, and seeing what he can do with them. Busta's record Cocaine on Big Bang sounds like one of those leftover Detox joints but look at the Bishop-era Dre shit after '06: Grow Up (could've been a big hit), Flashy, No Stoppin' Carson, Hallelujah, etc. There's some good shit there and I still say Kush was a banging ass beat that got wasted on lame lyrics and a weak hook. That was mixed flawlessly though.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Just listen to other good music that's out nowadays, otherwise it will spoil your Detox experience. Stop being all hyped up about constantly dropping RUMOURS about it, just wait till promo kicks off and legit info is put out. I got a feeling its comin out somewhere next year. Until then don't be too bothered about it.

    Hangover

  49. ^ Amen. People always freaking when rumors or deadlines don't come true when they were made up by anonymous nobodies on the net in the first place.

  50. I think the only way Dre can get the inspiration back to produce sick hip hop tracks if he changes his current lifestyle. That means he should stop with the steroids. And if he stopped smoking weed, he should start smoking weed again. To me he hasn't produced one classic track since he looks like the Hulk. I think he started with the steroids in 2007, and only average productions since then to me. Relapse in 2009 was nice, but for Dre productions they're still average to me.
I'm 50% sure it's the steroids that caused Dre's lack of inspiration the last few years.
Either that or he needs weed for inspiration.
He produced the best hip hop album of all time (first Chronic) with weed in his system. And he was smoking when he made 2001 too, right? Conclusion for Dre :Stop with the steroids and smoke some WEED!!!!!!!!!!
