Don't Give Up, Dr Dre's new material will be arriving soon!

Visit the "Coming Soon" section of HMV.com and you'll notice that topping the December pre-orders chart, as it has done on and off since it was first announced eight bleedin' years ago, is Dr Dre's mythical third album Detox. Of course, barring some kind of rupture in the space-time continuum, the much-delayed follow up to Dre's 2001 (which was actually released way back in 1999) won't now be coming out this year, a fact tacitly acknowledged on the site by the absence of any official artwork. Instead, Dre stares out from a crudely mocked-up cover with the guilty look of a feckless mechanic who promises to finish fixing your car just as soon as the parts are delivered, his sciatica's cleared up, and Mars has formed a favourable aspect with Pluto.

  2. Misleading title, but the article is right. Dre is slacking and people are laughing at him. I have faith in Dre's not releasing it until it's everything it should be attitude, but according to that philosophy it may never hit shelves.

  10. I think the Dr. Dre-Axl Rose comparison is unfair, Chinese Democracy didn't get put out because it was in development hell and some shit with label issues, had less to do with producing the actual content. I think I heard some of it once and the songs were just bullshit you expect but Dre has actually taken his time for real reasons that affect the content of Detox over and over whereas I thought Axl was just as the Guardian said, polishing a piece of shit to begin with.

Guardian article was amusing though but that's it. I can't remember if it's the Guardian, Independent, or some other UK newspaper shit that I like the most but it's all good. Dr. Dre is a lot more like Kevin Shields in some ways but the difference is Kevin Shields hasn't made an album since 1991 and hasn't musically worked since the Lost in Translation soundtrack. At least Dre can say he has output, Shields is more of a unicorn himself than Detox. I'm a fan of My Bloody Valentine, I listen to almost everything, and Loveless is one of those "perfect" albums IMO.

People should look to the recent example of "The Smile Sessions" by The Beach Boys, no joke, it just saw release after 45 years of never being put out. Dude who made it was crafting some shit ahead of its time in the late '60's, psychedelic pop, crafting a "perfect" album, but it never saw release for a bunch of reasons so he shelved it, had a nervous breakdown, withdrew completely, so it became this legend of sorts. I fuck with it, I fuck with it a lot lately, I'm big on music theory and diversified tastes and shit, and that album was on some next level shit. You'll never hear vocal harmony arrangements and things elsewhere like you do on that album.

If Detox ever got shelved, Dre would have to die eventually or change his mind for financial reasons, and then we would end up hearing it at least. But the dude isn't like other examples because we actually know he works on it as in crafting, perfecting, and recording. Dre will tryout 20 people for a feature before he figures out who sounds best on the track. All that type of stuff. Plus Dre has an immediate financial interest in putting it out by 2012, as does Iovine/Interscope, especially while the Beats brand is hot. You always want the boost when a brand like that has room to grow, not after it peaks in popularity or mind-share, and if Dre is on his business side then he would get that. Detox is coming I think, there's no evidence like other examples that Dre is just this recluse hiding shit from everyone (well sort of) and never working in the same breath he says he will.
