Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre Discuss New Song, 'The Recipe'

Earlier today (April 2), Dr. Dre and Kendrick Lamar talked to L.A.'s Power 106's Big Boy, of Big Boy's Neighborhood, Lamar's new single, "The Recipe." Check it out below.

"The Recipe," originally titled "Women, Weed & Weather," is an ode to the essentials of West Coast living. "When you discuss your love for lust/ Just make sure you visit here first/ Cali," Kendrick Lamar rhymes on "Recipe."

"Old title was 'Women, Weed & Weather,' Dre told Big Boy. 'That's the three things you need in life. 'The Recipe' is when you mix it all up,' Lamar chimed in.

The feel-good cut, produced by Scoop DeVille ( Snoop Dogg, Game, 50 Cent), will reportedlyl be featured on K.Dot's upcoming Aftermath/Interscope/ Top Dawg Entertainment debut album.

"This track was done by a guy named Scoop DeVille, and we just went into the studio and added our elements to it. I mixed it up. Kendrick wrote the words. It came together and we fell in love with it," Dre said.

  1. Fucking tears of joy fell from my face when I heard this shit. BANGING. Best thing to come out of the Aftermath camp in several years.

This song is not trying too hard, has a fantastic beat (although not fully produced by Dre) and is infectious enough to qualify as "pop" even thought its really just straight up West Coast "G" shit. That's what Dre always used to have that he lost in recent years: he used to make hardcore music that was so good that it crossed over and qualified as popular music. With all the watered down leaks of the last several years, it has seemed to be the opposite lately.

I think this will blow up, and give us our best shot ever at hearing Detox. If Dre decided to give this track to Kendrick, then one would assume that there are even better joints with them both on Detox. That's cause for celebration.

  6. It's okay.. not a 'game-changer' like the rumors were saying. Sad to say because I was really looking forward to this one.

  7. its a good track i was kinda hoping for something up tempo along the lines of still dre or whats the difference but in reality this is kendrick lamars track not dr dres so im sure hes kept the real heat for DETOX ..its pretty obvious kendrick wrote dres verses aswell ..that boy can spit no body can dispute that ...

  8. Nice track I'm sure I'll get more into it as I listen to it more. Can't wait for kendricks album though.....Now tat sumtin else has been released featuring dre I think detox should cum out tis year....

  9. Wow, This is totally awesome! Dre...Kendrick, you guys are incredible! I like dr. dre's verse (the greatest) but I am also feeling Kendrick's verse. Thóse who are saying this track is not good enough should give us an example of a track they think is awesome. This should not be a track done by another artist(s) but it should be something they have worked on themselves. Believe me its easier said than done! So if you are not feeling this track there is always a better way of expressing oneself (don't show off like you have better skills). Dr dre keep those beats coming and please don't let the haters discourage you from putting out DETOXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. Your skills are impeccable!

  13. I already love this song.

  14. Nice track, but Dre didn't produce this. Not feeling Dre's rapping style. He's trying too hard too sound original. He should only try to be original with his productions.

  16. The track is produced by Scoop DeVille.

  17. Scoop DeVille produced the track, it isn't a Dre beat but something tells me he put some of his touches in the mixing. The whole beat and even verses just melt together really well; it's all very fluid from beginning to end and never stops.

I think the song is banging. Kendrick's style isn't what we're expecting Dre's absolute best. If you want that Still D.R.E. single, you have to wait for Detox, or at the very least the Detox intro track.

This song is LA. This is laid back, the sun is out, palm trees, weed smoke, and a sick ass joint. Comparing it to your Detox expectations is on some bullshit. Section.80 isn't Detox and neither is his upcoming LP supposed to be. This is his big major label debut pushed through and mentored by Dre to maximize this kid's potential. Once you separate the two, appreciate this Recipe joint for what it is: a smoothed-out fucking LA banger. I'm co-signing it.

  18. It was produced by Scoop DeVille... A great track nonetheless

  19. this is weak.......

  20. this is sick. cant wait for the album

  21. Loved it. Think of it in context guys. If you were born and raised in LA, and can't connect with the tone and flow of this song, then you don't know the westcoast sound. Slap yourself silly for saying this song is "shit" or "weak". You people probably will NEVER be satisfied by anything from dre or kendrick that attempts to bring back the westcoast sound. in that case go listen to your drake and weezy or that ratchet shit on the radio these days.

    ReplyDelete
  22. this shit is classic. holy shit. i dont know what you fools want, although it wasnt produced by dr. dre this is some classic westcoast shit. the next single will probably be a dre beat.

    ReplyDelete
  23. anonymous - you will never get satisfied - even if Dre buys the ocean
this is a new era - and the nice thing about this song for me is the beat
it flows endlessly and that woman is always ringing something in my ear . . nice
not style i was expecting from Dre though , nice track nevertheless. I like it; i like Kush more - it was baning more than this.

  25. can't wait for kendrick's album and detox please lets hope they both release this year lets go Aftermath 2012 along with Slaughterhouse on May 15th lets gooooooooo

  26. i think its a dope track, you guys have to let 2001 go just like the chronic, 2001 is not like the chronic at all that g funk sound was replaced with the piano and now theres going to be a new sound. Its time to move on support dre, support kendrick and support the new west coast movement so we can get rid of wack music and get real hip hop back. i was listening at power 106 when it came out and DRE said that scoop deville produced it but he still added his magic just like Game's hate it or love it it was produced by cool and dre but the good doctor made it sound like a classic. remember you cant rap about being broke when he sold 51% of his company for 300 million $$ or riding lowriders no more that is from the past

  27. this is not westcoast this shit will get no radio play. This is some weak ass generic J Cole cant get enough wanna be beat.

    ReplyDelete
  28. ahh -I meant banging more than this in the previous post
anyways - like i said - the woman in this beat is addictive,
I honestly dont expect Dre to come up with the same 2001 chronic- was listening to it on my way to work - classic - but times have changed - and i think Dre is trying to change the game - and this track is a good start

he must just keep up the momentum. That is more tracks -

Doesnt matter who produced the track as long as the song is good.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nico if you think this track is going to change the game you are delusional

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love this track! another dose of this sound for Detox please :-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. What i am saying is that the game is changing - this song is on the rite track.

I like Kendrik Lamar - but i dont think he is as versatile as SlimTheMobster

You guys hated slim's mixtape - but its on the tip that you guys are looking for, not this track - but its not a Dre track; so it suits Kendriks style

All of you are confused and dont really know what you want.

    1. you should have quit when you were ahead. how you just sound like an idiot. slim the mobster versatile? he only has a thug persona and it's not really working. his beats are average at best. some people are going to like this track and others are not get over it. if they choose to not like this track for whatever reason let em be closed minded and hate. I personally think that this track is crack and cant get enough of it.

    2. U got a good point there about slim and thug persona.

IMO hip hop role models today should be the opposite, and that is people like Kendrick.

  34. All you forget that this is a KENDRICK LAMAR TRACK NOT A DR. DRE TRACK.

  35. I never said i dislike the track
    and
Anonymous - thanks for calling me an idiot.
The Kendrik Lamar track is nice - I have listened to most of his tracts from Secion 80 and OD, and I still think he has the same style of rapping. The only time i heard him do anything different was on the remix with Buster Rhymes.

The beat is catchy, but its stil Kendrik Lamar. He rights good lyrics, but stil same style of rapping. Thats my point. No matter what beat you give him - he always follows the same pattern - and no ways i can listen to his whole album unless he loosens up a bit; experiement with different ways of rapping and still remain original.

  36. This cut is crack, I can't stop listening.

  37. I think that this track is disappointing. I am just not feeling it. Kendrick has potential but if he is going to be labeled as Dre's next protege than he is going to have to release a hit single produced by Dre to get the ball rolling. Remember " What's my name/ My name is. That's what I'm looking for if this guy is the NEXT. I'm just not feeling it the same wayl I did with " G thing, Still Dre ". You know what I mean as for a Westcoast souding collabo . Why is Dre holding out on production. There has to be a reason. Hoopefully he's saving it for Detox. Dre's lyrical skill is sub par and compare's with his lackluster performance on " Drug Test ". I thought he had it just right on the unreleased incomplete could have been hit " Die Hard. " I think that any hope to ressurect the West still lies on Dre's hands with Detox and it's sound.
