Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg will turn the desert into one giant West Coast
party when they hit the stage for a co-headlining performance at the
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this Sunday and again on April
22 in Indio, Calif. Joining them will be plenty of surprise guests
(Eminem? Wiz Khalifa?) and JoiStaRR, who will provide background vocals.
The
L.A.-based singer-songwriter, who previously toured with Kanye West,
took a break from rehearsals to speak to Rap-Up.com about being a part
of the historic hip-hop moment. Find out what you can expect from the
highly-anticipated show, whether we’ll get to hear some long-awaited Detox material, and some of the surprises that await.
So how did this all come together?
Adam Blackstone, who was Kanye’s former musical director—we worked
together on the “Glow in the Dark” tour—he called me the day after I got
back from SXSW and he’s like, “Are you available to do some shows with
Dr. Dre for Coachella?” I’m like, “Well, sure. Let me check my schedule,
but I’m sure I can clear it.” So a few weeks passed and he called me
and said we’re locked in and we need to come to rehearsal.
What’s Dr. Dre like?
He’s very, very into his craft. I’m very inspired by his work ethic.
He’s there at rehearsal on time, he’s there ready to work, and I think
that’s very inspiring for someone like me, an up-and-coming artist to
see someone that’s established still be that hungry and that focused.
His personality is really laid-back and he’s just really cool. Him and
his wife are very, very generous, lovely people. I felt at home right
away and I had only known them like a week. I feel like his little
sister at this point.
Where have you been rehearsing?
We rehearsed in Burbank and then we moved production to an airport
hangar in Santa Monica because the stage is so huge, we need to rehearse
lighting and all that type of stuff. The stage is amazing. I can’t wait
for people to see it and to see people’s reaction to what actually
takes place. There’s a lot of surprises and a lot of surprise guests.
People are gonna be very happy when they see the show.
What material will you guys be performing?
We’re gonna basically be performing all of Dre’s hits and then Snoop’s.
It’s going to be very epic and I’m just really grateful to be a part
of history being made. Dre said that this year it will be 20 years that
him and Snoop have been working together since they did “Deep Cover.”
And that’s amazing to even be a part of this moment in their lives. I
get to be onstage singing with everyone involved. It’s gonna be crazy.
Are we going to hear any new stuff? Maybe something off Detox?
Umm… OK, yes [laughs].
Rolling Stone reported that Eminem and Wiz Khalifa will be among the surprise guests.
I’m not gonna say anything. We’ll just have to see if they show up.
Nate Dogg is said to be appearing via a hologram, according to TMZ.
I’m not privy to that information, but there’s definitely a tribute to Nate Dogg.
What would you tell fans who are attending Coachella this weekend?
They can expect to have wide-open mouths and a jaw-dropping experience
with this show. It’s gonna be very huge. Apparently it’s supposed to be
like 100,000 people coming. It’s gonna be packed, it’s gonna be amazing,
it’s gonna be fun. They’re gonna hear all their favorite songs and some
stuff that they’ve been dying to hear.
JoiStaRR’s debut album Magic is due this summer on My Block Inc. Download her mixtape Magic Monday and listen to her single “I’m Not Bleeding” below.

ReplyDeleteCAAANNNNTTTTT BEEEEELLLLIIIVVVEEEEEEE
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be crazy.. I can't wait. Hopefully Dre won't disappoint his fans
ReplyDeleteYesssssssssss
ReplyDeletewhat the fuck for real?
ReplyDeleteyup i just knew there had to be a detox single there its perfect timing
ReplyDeleteIts coming! DETOX!
ReplyDeleteFYI, Youtube is streaming Coachella this weekend. The Dre show will be at 10PM on Sunday. I am not certain they have rights to stream that yet, it's TBD, but I have a feeling it will. Don't forget to click a few ads ;)

So now folks you have all heard it. Detox maybe coming out!
ReplyDeleteI'm still not putting my money on his Coachella set banging out any Detox singles or material. Why get your hopes up? She didn't outright say Detox shit is on the way to be performed, she could've just affirmed "new" material is on the set list which could mean anything.
ReplyDeleteI am pleased he's making a fan-deserved spectacle of his performances than just walking through an expected Dre/Snoop nostalgia set, taking it seriously with a lot of guests and stage collaborations, and I bet this will get an extremely strong reception and hype between the first and last sets they do. He knows what he's doing. If Dre gets the big reaction doing some new shit, even if it's not exactly cut-and-dry planned to be on Detox, I'm hoping what comes next is him realizing the energy and anticipation is waiting on him to put Detox out. Encouragement, focus, and passion is what's going to convince Dre to finish and put it out, and a big reaction from Coachella is the medicine to do it regardless if he tries out Detox session joints or not.
yeah i dont want to over-analyse, but then again dont want to get over excited, but not sure if her response if reassuring.
DeleteI didnt want to be the 1st to doubt as, afraid of being slated here lol.
Lol plugin they asked her directly if they'll perform detox material, se said yes. She said we'll hear some stuff we've been dying to hear. What you think it is? Dre announcing his cat gave birth?
ReplyDeleteIf Joistarr's words weren't twisted/made up/wrong interpretated by Rap-Up and Dre doesn't change his mind in the next day, its DETOX time.
Hangover
If you want to take her word as gospel that's fine, but in general terms I don't want to lock myself into believing and expecting Dre to debut official Detox material when all I expect is a badass set. Even new shit doesn't necessarily mean it'll be on Detox but it doesn't mean I'm not hoping for the best scenario - like him using Coachella to announce a release date or anything remotely official. We'll see and hope but I know if he does even one song and Detox is just not something mentioned by anyone on stage, people are going to cry and whine on this blog ignoring it'll be a sick ass show.
DeleteWhen it comes to Detox anything I ran out of reasons to take anyone's word about it a long time ago but that's just me.
Seriously guys..would you bet every dollar in your bank accounts that a detox track is coming? Me neither. I'm seriously hoping she's right, but I'm not just going to accept what she says without reminiscing about every other time some artist said it was finally REALLY coming..im just going to enjoy the show and appreciate the performances. You should to
ReplyDeleteBut there's a difference between someone saying Detox it's comin and someone who's a backing vocal of Dre on one of the biggest festivals in the world, havin rehearseled with him the songs they'll play sayin they'll perform Detox material.
ReplyDeleteNormally I'm also very careful with nex Detox news, but if there was a right moment to be at least a bit hyped bout wether or not it's comin,it's now.
Again I say if her words were legit.
Hangover
Im not getting my hopes up anymore about Detox but a release date announcement or even a track preview would be nice but this is thde same Dre that released an unfinished clip of a track Die Hard almost a year ago and nothing else was ever spoken of or heard of since about. The song had alot of potential. Kendrick's new track is average and on par with Drug Test but is nothing special. The question is is where are all of these Dre produced Tracks. Do they exist. I hope for Kendrick's sake that he will get alot of help and input from Dre with his new album cause he is going to need it cause I am just not feelin it compared to Snoops,Game's,Eminems, debut. Where are the Dre tracks because that's what everyone is waiting for whether it's for Detox Kendrick, etc. Anyway it would be nice to see these guys tour one last time but I've already been to the Up and Smoke tour and that was 12 years ago. Im not too excited to here anything live that I've heard before. I want to hear some new futuristic shit thats next level and The Recipe just doesn't fit. Hopefully for the fans sake a release date for Detox is on the horizon and this is a sign for good things to come. We've bought the headphones and have been patient long enough. It's time for Dre to deliver Detox 2012. He owe's it to his true and loyal fans.
ReplyDeletethat was craaaaaaaaaazy. same time next weekend!!!
