Scoop DeVille talks producing "The Recipe" for Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre, and says to expect more work from him and K. Dot.
In a recent interview with Bootleg Kev for Hot 97.5 in Las Vegas, Scoop explained that rapper Stat Quo was instrumental in connecting him with Dr. Dre. He said that Stat actually showed Dre the song, and that within an hour of hearing it, Dre snagged it up for Lamar's LP. Scoop also added that the song will be one of a few of his productions featured on K. Dot's debut.
"Man it's unreal, it's still catching up to me right now as we speak. My phone hasn't stopped ringing," he said. "I always knew Kendrick from back in the day when we were just grinding here with a lot of the rappers on the scene…Stat Quo was over at my house, and we were just playing beats, and I was playing him all the new stuff I had, and he was like, 'I'ma play some of this stuff for [Dr.] Dre'…I didn't expect anything 'cus some of the records weren't sounding west coast or anything that Dre would do normally. I got the phone call within an hour from Dre, and they were like, 'We want to work with these records,' and sure enough, they fell in love with [that record] and that's the record that everybody wanted to focus on to be as the single."
He added, "We've got a few singles in the pipeline also for [Kendrick's album]. I think everybody is going to be pretty amazed once they hear everything, 'cus Kendrick is real talented and it's just cool to be a part of the movement with Dre."
Scoop also spoke on the unique sample featured in the song. He said that he actually looked to indie rock group Twin Sister's "Meet the Frownies" for the production, explaining that he heard the cut on the radio and immediately saw its hit potential.
"[The sample is of] a group called Twin Sister, and the song is called 'Meet the Frownies,'" he explained. "It's like an indie rock joint that I heard on an indie station out here [in Los Angeles] before I was going out of town…and the record just came on and I was just real captivated by it and it won me over right when it started. I was like, 'Yo, I got to do something with this, I know this could be something big.'"
