Dre has a massive vision for Tupac Hologram

As chants of “Tupac Back” rise across social media platforms and throughout the blogosphere after the hologram appearance of 2Pac at Coachella, it appears that the crescendo of voices could motivate Dr. Dre to tour with the revived rap legend. Sources close to Dre told the Wall Street Journal that the business teams of the legendary producer and Snoop Dogg are discussing the possibility of taking the digital 2Pac on tour.

Although the 2Pac hologram appearance had been in the works for a year, Digital Domain, the company who helmed the project, and projection company AV Concepts said it took about four months to recreate the eerily lifelike images of the late Shakur. Folks on the Digital Domain side are proud of their creative coup, hinting that Dr. Dre has big plans for the hologram.

“To create a completely synthetic human being is the most complicated thing that can be done,” said Digital Domain's Ed Ulbrich. “This is not found footage. This is not archival footage. This is an illusion. This is just the beginning. Dre has a massive vision for this.”

2Pac isn't the first entertainer to appear as a hologram as AV Concepts and other companies have done similar projects in the past. However, 2Pac is the first time a deceased artist has been recreated for a live performance.

  2. It's not even actual 3D hologram technology. I read they literally and painstakingly recreated Tupac with CG and the image was just projected on glass or something. It's cool it wasn't just ripped from an old recorded performance, but there is something kind of cheap and fucked up about using a computer to recreate someone who died to appear and perform like a ghost at your show.

I think this sort of thing is cool for one-shot, big performance surprises, but making an entire tour out of this dilutes the excitement and novelty of it. It's going to begin a bad trend I see coming. I'm not on board even though I get that people probably would want to see Tupac perform, but taking his CG ghost on the road? Don't give me any of that "Tupac's mom approves so it's okay" bullshit either, going by history she seems to okay just about anything to do with her son's image as long as you write a big enough check to her foundation.

Dre gets this much excitement to pay big money, keep secrets, and put on CG Tupac to perform at Coachella, even though Dre and Pac were very obviously never friends and was definitely beefing (which is why Dre doesn't share the stage with him), and now he wants to take this shit on the road like a traveling circus, but no passion or marching forward with Detox? It is what it is, Detox is entirely in Dre's hands, but this shit needs to be addressed so we know what time it is. If Dre is shelving Detox or already did long ago figuring he'll come back to it when he gets these TDE guys out of the door, then let us know so we can drop it and replace our anticipation for Kendrick, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul putting out Aftermath albums. I don't care if Dre is dropping Detox, I just want to know so we can all stop setting ourselves up for disappointment expecting this or that to finally be the big opportunity he uses to give us what we want. At this point it sure as fuck doesn't look like Dre even remembers Detox and has his mind and ambitions set on other things.
