Too Short Talks Dr Dre Collab

Please note that this was from one year ago.

Too Short recalls linking up with another West Coast legend, Dr. Dre.

If Too Short can be described as the consummate producer of music with his 19th album, No Trespassing, hitting shelves last week (February 28), his polar opposite is Dr. Dre.
But, as Short Dog revealed in an interview with VIBE.com, last summer he helped Dre come one step closer to release his long-awaited album, Detox.

"[Dr. Dre] had this song it was called 'Man’s Best Friend' - aka 'Pussy' -  and from what I understood he kept getting people to rap on it,” explained Too Short. “And Dre is a perfectionist. He didn’t like what they were doing on it and he didn’t plan on using it."

"Then somebody suggested my name, so he called me in. I’m not even gonna lie to you, the rap that I did for Dr. Dre, I didn’t write the rap. Kurupt’s little brother wrote it - Roscoe - and he pimped me one hell of a sixteen-bar verse. Dre had me in there, the first session was nine hours."

Too Short revealed that the respect he felt for Dre was mutual. "You know how cool Dre is? This is how cool Dr. Dre is—he asked his people, ‘how much does Short want for the verse?’ And when I said what I wanted his response was, ‘Pay him double.’ That was the homie. I had never had anyone get at me like that."

Check out the interview below.

  3. This took place "last summer" so although it's a nice anecdote to hear, it's useless as information or news because nobody else will ever hear that song.

Dre has been working with everyone, he tries out a laundry list of people to see if their bars have perfect synergy with the beat, and I bet 99.999% of the time none of these tracks go anywhere even if Dre spends a shitload of time on them. It's not news when people speak up and go on about working with Dre because it doesn't mean anything. News would be who HASN'T worked with Dre on Detox...

  4. Now this is more like it...Too Short will fit Detox nicely, Dre is going the right route with features like this (as opposed to the young money muppets)...this song could be a "Fuck You-Part 2"

  5. This was posted on here a year ago but user didn't think it was credible good one reporter!

  6. Completely agree plugin, half of the tracks dre scrappes, and this is why it has taken so long. Dre looks for those next level unquestionable tracks and without the right lyrics they mean nothing.

However, my hope for detox is slightly fading. We are all putting our hopes on the Coachella performances and if nothing is announced then we are back to square one. We will just have to see but dre keeps himself to himself and it could be released any time between now and ten years.

  8. i don't understand how dre seems to be overly-scrutinising every verse like this, on songs which may not even come out, and yet at the same time he releases Kush which had pretty average verses

  9. What are u talking about??makes no sense whatsoever , I'm sick of reading stupid comments like this

How do u know that "every track will be phenomenal"?

  10. I didn't think the verses from Kush were bad at all, it's just a weed song and there's not much to go from there. It's been known for a long time Dre's habits with lyrics follow the routine of getting them from all sorts of people (if not just DOC), figuring out which flows best and works best, and he has final say to change any of it. I'll defend the joint because I thought it was pretty good. Sick beat, classic piano loop, great production, but then it all gets shit on by Akon's voice which brings the entire song down. That and the weed subject matter.

Also Kush was leaked, it wasn't pushed out as a single until after the fact.

Every track is not going to be phenomenal no matter how much work is put into every second of a track, it's an impossible standard to accomplish. Dre's focus should just stay on figuring out the musical theme and sound he wants and just making one great, cohesive album that flows together from beginning to end. He can be forgiven if not every track is the shit, I just want one good whole album. This faggot ass iTunes and ringtone culture is taking away the album and artists making great whole albums in favor of singles.

  12. Yeah man agree wid u. The chronic and 2001 albums were classics and not every tune on them were phenomenal. Take tracks such as "light speed" and "Some LA niggaz" both tracks arnet classics but suite the flow of the 2001 album. We will just have to wait and see but i bet there are suprises. I watched a preview track with slim the mobster in the studio. That shit had epic vocals and is an awsome up tempo track! Check it out!

  14. Dre needs a different new act. This isnt about saving the west, its about saving american music, period. Rock, rap, and pop are dead. With all these average rappers and acts we see everyday again, and again for the last 20 years, I dont see what all the excitments about. Im beginning to think all his success has been accidental. He needs a new act, something hard, but new, a new mc, telling a new, exciting story. hip hop dont need another too short song, it needs simething NEW! WAKE UP!

You are "beginning to think that all of [Dre's] success is accidental"? I'm sure you mean well but that statement really defies logic and common sense. You can't produce classics for 20 years, and have had a hand in nearly half of hip-hop's classic catalogue and accomplish that by mistake. Countless of hip hop's biggest moments in history have all came heavily from the contributions of this one man. Thats no fluke -- people don't get lucky for 25 years in a row.

On that note, I have a thought for the members of this blog, and maybe it's a bit controversial: Are we being unrealistic or unreasonable in expecting Dre to come out with Detox and completely change the game AGAIN? This man has changed the game several times over, and is now 48 years old. 48! There are not many artists in music history who have had fertile, productive careers and then changed the game AGAIN this late into their career. That point is even more salient when you think about the fact that Dre has already changed his sound several times over his career (e.g. the sample driven sound of NWA, the g-funk movement of Death Row, the gothic sound of early aftermath, etc.)

In other words, maybe we've seen the best of his portfolio (which already qualifies him the best ever) and he doesn't have the inspiration to create something new that measures up to the past. I hope that's not the case, but I'm just saying it would be understandable -- musical inspiration doesn't last forever, not even with the greats.

At this point, I hope that Detox is a game-changer, but I'm more just hoping it comes out and is a good, cohesive conclusion to his trilogy of albums. Godfather III wasn't as good as parts I and II, but the trilogy is still doper for the addition of the third. I'm hoping for the same here...
