Lady Gaga was snubbed to do vocals for I Need a Doctor

Grammy-winning rapper Eminem decided to pass on an opportunity to have Lady Gaga appear on Dr. Dre's "I Need A Doctor" Detox single for music newcomer Skylar Grey.
According to Grey, Gaga was already slated to appear on the record's final version.
Along with Dre, Skylar has Eminem to thank for her continued success, even going to bat for her when she penned the hook to "I Need a Doctor" and the label attempted to swap her vocals for Lady Gaga's. "Somebody in the room suggested we get Lady Gaga to sing the hook on 'I Need a Doctor' and [Eminem] stood up for me and said no, because he wanted to keep my voice on the song," she says. "That was a big thing for me because had I not kept my voice on 'I Need a Doctor,' who knows where I'd be right now." She continues, "After the Grammy Awards performance of that song, alot of things changed for me. It really changed my life. It provided a great platform for me, and I'm forever grateful for Eminem and Dr. Dre." Skylar revealed that she had 6500 more Twitter followers in the immediate minutes that followed that fateful Grammy performance. (Hip Hop DX)

  1. ..."Somebody in the room suggested ..." Here is the problem of Detox.

  2. Pretty sure that "somebody" was Jimmy Iovine (who else would suggest that?) who is also the executive producer of Detox. I don't know if it needs to be said, but it doesn't help Jimmy's only interest/job at Interscope is to make money for the label and his stockholders and maximize the profits for anticipated releases just like Detox - not give two shits about the actual music or whether it's good.

    Everyone knows when music becomes business on a major label that the artist has to concede so that those labels make their money back. If you're optimistic you can say that's why the singles like Kush and INAD aren't great but Detox will be, because those two records are obviously for the radio and to get Eminem fans to buy the album. At the same time, Dre runs Aftermath as a boutique label and most likely has full control over everything he does, but it is kind of fucked up because Jimmy has much more influence over Dre's shit than people think. It's also not like Dre isn't in it for the money either, he's spent a lot more of his time and energy plugging his bullshit overpriced headphones sitting next to Jimmy than actually finishing Detox for the fans. Dre has to care about sales, which he really shouldn't, because Jimmy has instilled it in him that therefor Detox needs to have mainstream appeal. That perspective ends up convincing artists and whatever that success is measured by money, not by what the fans think or end up adoring as classics. Oh well, nothing new.

  3. thank god.

    it would've been SO stupid if the title was "I Need a Doctor feat. Lady Gaga and Eminem". XD

    like, its counter-intuitive 'cause you need a doctor and you have Lady Gaga in it? Lady GAGA...

    and Eminem did the right thing and dissed Lady Gaga in Bad Meets Evil soon after. Ahh, go Em.

  4. Lady Gaga ==> Pop
    Dr Dre ==> Gangsta rap
    Limp Bizkit ==> Pimp Rock

    This segmentation of music will gradually disappear

    All are in Interscope Records, It's all about making profits. Thoses artists are actually products, and in the strategy of products you have to manage the positionning of your product (Dr Dre gangsta rap) versus the evolution of the market (globalization of the pop/hip hop/rock music ==> see Kanye's work or Eminem on Recovery), moreover you have to define the right message (nowdays it's more about "Hope of the humanity for a better world in the future for our children" or a "message of a global mankind" like in Run this town) ==> see the sucess of Not Afraid it sounds like an Anthem of the hope.

    And people who are saying (like me or the post above) that Lady Gaga cannot be on Detox are now a minority.

    We are the few who inherited the wave of segmentation of the music of the 2000s (our profile: we have 20 to 30 years and we hate Justin Beiber) why? The new generation is to crush us, we are caught between millions of consumers 10 to 20 years and their parents who are between 40 and 60 years. It is currently the primary target of labels (Mr Iovine has understood). Also, I'm sure That our generation (who hate Beiber) is the generation that most hack music on internet.

    To conclude, we don't buy the music, we are in minority, ==> so we are not interresting for the business of label like Interscope.

    We are the lost generation ... ^^
