Nottz tells Conspiracy Worldwide Radio that five years ago, he had the "Detox" intro with Dre and Game, and all these later, he believes his beat will be the first you hear on the anticipated LP.
Famed Virgina producer/emcee Nottz released his first solo album last year in You Need This Music. Additionally, the longtime hit-maker for Busta Rhymes, Ghostface Killah and Little Brother produced Rah Digga's comeback album, Classic, and a free mixtape with Asher Roth, Rawth EP . With a banner year in 2010, Nottz may get a massive commercial breakthrough this year, should Dr. Dre finally decided to release Detox. Speaking with Conspiracy Worldwide Radio last evening, Nottz touched on his long-standing contributions to Dr. Dre's third and final ensemble album.
"When [Dr. Dre] first started talking about Detox, I had the first joint on that album. Now, I have the first joint on this [latest working version] of the album," said Nottz, referring to Dre's work in the early '00s as well as more recent creations. "The first song, Game did a verse to it, and Dre was on it; they rapped on the intro of the album," he revealed. "I never heard it, but Dre and them told me about it, that it was hot. Just Blaze told me that he heard the joint [and thought] it was crazy [also]."
Although Nottz did not indicate which songs, that initial early '00s Detox production would later be used by two then-Aftermath Entertainment artists. "I had did two versions to the track," Nottz said, before Busta Rhymes and Stat Quo both recorded to the song.
As far as the title of the early incarnation of Detox, Nottz also revealed that Dre and Game were going to kick the album off with a song title "As God As Might Witness," he said, before hesitating "or something like that."
Nottz, who on several occasions flew to California to work in Dr. Dre's recording studio compound, has watched Detox shift in sound and focus. On his first encounter with Dr. Dre, Nottz said that the N.W.A. alum played him 40 beats, all rooted in the sound employed on his 1992 solo debut The Chronic. Noting that Dre's production team, which once included Scott Storch, Mike Elizondo and Mel-Man, now includes Dewaun Parker, Che Vicious and others has changed, Nottz revealed that a more recent sampling of Detox sounds was built upon "30 east coast tracks." Nottz, who has worked with some of New York Hip Hop's biggest names said, "It threw me off, 'cause it was all east coast records. Then he scrapped all of them, threw them out." Despite the change of sonic climate, Nottz rests assured, "I think he kept like two of my joints." The producer is also under the impression that both Jake One and DJ Khalil have confirmed placements on the album, expected to release this year.
Then again, Nottz can only be so sure. As this Detox album has changed and evolved throughout the last decade, Conspiracy Worldwide's host, Mista Montana, asked Nottz how certain he was that he still had that Detox intro, the veteran confirmed, "We got checks cut, but you know, records don't make albums."

eyyy... wasn't the Detox intro supposed to be called Intervention?
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking this is gonna be "Dr. Dre Presents The Detox"...
ReplyDeleteDoesn't sound like Dre really trusts his own sound anymore. DJ Khalil ,Alex Da kidd, nottz etc. etc. Maybe we'll get a couple beats from dre?
ReplyDeleteDr. Dre presents The Detox. I love it! OVER THE HILL AND GONE!
ReplyDeleteThe truth is coming and all captured on a record. Just one read of the credits and you will know who is who in the industry.
ReplyDeleteScript from interview - "The first song, Game did a verse to it, and Dre was on it; they rapped on the intro of the album," he revealed. "I never heard it, but Dre and them told me about it, that it was hot. Just Blaze told me that he heard the joint [and thought] it was crazy [also]."
ReplyDeleteMaybe the above dre & game track is the intervention.
uzee first off shouts for the great blog site I wish people would just quit their bitchin about the 2 releases from Dre thus far. The two songs are not that bad. People need to realize that this isn't the Dre from NWA,CHRONIC 1/2 This is a more older wiser more mature DRE I think that if they are expecting that they are going to be very disappointed. If detox was to sound like his older albums it would just be a rehash. Hip hop doesn't need another Chronic It already has one that is a classic To quote Storch"detox is going to be the most advanced hip hop record ever recorded".That is what hip hopo needs. Something new. Real fans will not be disappointed. We haven't even heard a full finished Dre produced track for detox. Im sure after 10 years in the making we are not going to be held to just these two different types of styles Kallil/Alex the kid.I think that this album is going to be way better than anything Dre has ever released.Patiently waiting for DETOX UZEE PLEASE RESPOND
ReplyDeleteUr spot on in in line with my thinking, pitty you couldn't identify urself ; )
ReplyDeleteI cant see a pure straight west coast album with a Dre who is passed all this.
I have been saying that it will be a mature album.
After so many years workin on detox, half the fans could say that they didnt/dont wanna hear another chronic/2001. Im remember Dre said himself that he doesnt want to rap about the same old thing again.
People need to open their minds.
Lets take an example from the movies:
BEFORE The Dark Knight was created/released, many people applauded Tim Burtons version of Batman, and maybe thought the new/reinvented Batman wont be the same. But look what happened, The Dark Knight was a masterpiece, with not just visual effects, but a deeper story and characters.
Thanks for ur appreciation of this blog. The reason i created it was not be 'famous' or anything, it was to make dre fans aware of whats going on with detox and other news.
Follow me on twitter @uzee1 or my FB group
I have to say, Dark Knight is the truth. ; ) Freeky Zee
ReplyDeleteDre is the greatest producer of all times.. You're telling me he can't make his own beats anymore??? Dre did re invent himself from the deathrow sound to aftermath sound. But now i think the dissapointing Relapse album that he produced all songs except onedemonstrated that he lost all confidence in his sound. His letting Alex da kidd, nottz, and all these guys produce his album. That didn't happen before. If anyone can re invent themselves its dre. But you cant do that by using someone else's sound.
ReplyDelete^^ look man i aint gonna be picky like this.
ReplyDeleteI liked both kush and i need a doctor. Regardless of if/how much dre contributed.
For years and years now we have read that other producers have/are giving stuff for detox. So when tracks come out its not a surprise to me that dj khalil and alex da kid worked on it.
I listened to the in-house aftermath producers work, to also get a rough idea of what they could submit for detox.
if u do recognize it Uzee (the fact that others do music for Dre), how can u still be his fan? what do u appreciate still about him? if he doesn't do his music any more, doesn't write his texts (which he never did), doesn't have any especially good rapping skills (and uses others to do reference tracks for him), what is it in Dre that u still like and makes u being his fan? Explain it to me please...
ReplyDeleteDre is the greatest producer of all times. That why he deserves all the accolades in the world. That's why he has so many millions of fans across the world. Including Uzee. But fans have a say also and criticism is fair if it is constructive. And what us real dre fans are saying is that we aren't closed to a new dre sound. Like how he changed from deathrow, to the firm, to aftermath. Dre is the best period. If he is recreating a sound, like he always has. It has to be organic, it has to be his own sound. It can be an alex da kidd sound(which always sound the same). It has to be a dre sound. No one else's!!!
ReplyDelete^^quite right
ReplyDeleteAll im saying is from what i've read, other producers will contribute. Like as dre fans i do want that dre 'sound', whatever it will sound like in 2011/2012.
Dre could spread/communicate/put forward his 'sound' to his in-house other producers.
I am not going to compare dre's recent/present work ethic/contributions with chronic and 2001. But a good example would be that my best Game album is The Documentary. For the reason the topics of the tracks were great and the overall sound and production was top notch.
This Game's first album was heavily influenced by dr dre's sound etc.
Here is a question I would like to ask:
Many fans dont like 'i need a doctor' because (1) the beat wasnt produced by dr dre, (2)it's likely he didnt write his own verse.
Having said the above - this move is similar to 'still dre', on which scott storch contributed, and jay-z wrote???
No its not still dre was produced by dr. dre did not have ANY pop influence and while it did have significant contributions it was a dre beat through and through and even scott storch has said this. Dre never writes his own lyrics so that wasn't a surprise. The "i need a doctor" sounds like "love the way you lie" meaning lacking originality. Still Dre was an original track. It brought the westcoast back and introduced a new "dre" sound and Dr. dre rapped all the verses. I need a doctor lacks originality and dr. dre influence. BIG difference.
ReplyDeleteAnd my last point dr. dre has always had great contributions from young producers. Daz, mel-man, elizondo, storch etc. etc. But he would produce the records. A signature dre beat, heavy bass, the westcoast whistle sound, heavy piano. I need a doctor doesn't have an inch of dr. dre production wise. It's alex da kidd all the way. And while the record deserves its#1 hit status. It's lacking an originality and dre influence like I stated above. I'm not opposed to dr. dre having contributions or changing sounds like he did w/ the firm but I want it to be dr. dre beats.
ReplyDeleteYes in terms of sound there is a difference between the two. But i mean in terms of creation process and structure.
ReplyDeleteI just cant say that detox will be weak if it doesnt have westcoast sound.
Uzee...i think you need to educate yourself a little more and go read the listed credits inside booklets on CD's. Law firms and copyright agencies make sure that those listings are correct.
ReplyDeleteErm i think i have the general idea but thanks. Im just treating this dre era seperate from the '2001' not compairing it in terms of sound.
ReplyDeleteIn terms sound fairly recent contributions to other tracks, i loved the hard hitting drums he did for jay-z's 'beach chair'. The cinematic sound experience of busta rhymes' 'legend of the fall offs', which i think dawaun parker also worked on.
Again the biggest difference is that dre had contributions in the past but it was his sound. He produced the beat or he would play the piano riffs. This track has no dr. dre influence at all. It lack originality, it sounds like love the way you lie. And uzee it doesn't have to be a westcoast sound, but it has to be a dre sound. I need a doctor is not because its alex da kidd's. Listen to the firm album, dre did eascoast beats, but it was dope. It was original. This isn't. Listen to lasers (lupe fiasco). Its the same thing.
ReplyDeleteIt doesnt have to have westcoast sound but it has to have dre sound. And I need a doctor, to put it plainly doesn't! Dre doesn't contribute anything to it. It's alex da kidd's sound. Which is something dre fans do not want to hear. We waited too long.
ReplyDeleteThe firm project with dre was dope yes.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the instruments on the inad track and lupe's track r the same, the rythm differs.
Lets agree detox doesnt have to be a westcoast sound. Im just thinkin ahead that incase dre doest stamp his sound on detox, then it would be his inhouse producers.
It has to be a dre sound...
ReplyDeleteAnd you are comparing what Alex da kidd did on previous tracks lasers, i need a doctor, love the way you lie. You're not talking about what dr. dre did or produce and that is what is missing from this track. Because its completely and alex da kidd production. That is what is missing here= Dr. dre. Still Dre changed the gamed it was original and it was a beat produced by dr. dre and w/ help of scott storch. This i need a doctor track you can give to eminem, lupe fiasco, b.o.b. and they will make a hit out of it. It is not Dr. dre
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know will Mel-Man produce for Detox?
ReplyDeleteFrom what it sounds like now, He probably won't. Dre changed the direction of the album.
ReplyDeleteUzee-
ReplyDeleteThis is getting to be redundant. you cannot disagree with this statement. Though you have a great blog you were not there from the beginning. I love what you have done with the blog and website and appreciate your insite but being that I am old school...Yeesh (36 yrs old) I grew up on Dre and not Pop...I am from Detroit and grew up near Eminem...I saw him come up threw the ranks...and I have always followed him through his mixtapes up to his collaborations with Dre....
The thing that concerns me as a fan is that Dre has left his roots. Employing others to add insight to his beats is mind boggling....half these fans dont even remember the good old days...what ever happened to DRE....
The songs that he put out when nobody was expecting them...Above the rim (Froggy Style) ..Deep Cover (with Snoop)... I can never doubt this guy...but the direction that this album is taking is the WRONG DIRECTION.
I Can appreciate the marketing piece and understand that Dre wants to reconnect with his old fans but seriously...this is ridiculous... Dre's best stuff might be behind him. You have to understand that. he gave away the next Detox when he gave Game all his beats for The Doctors Advocate (which he indeed did).
All I am saying is that I hope Dre knows what he is doing here because the fans have waited too long....................
Sincerely,
a concerned fan
JMAC
^^totally JMAC.
ReplyDeleteLike i said in one of previous comments here. He also gave away his goods stuff for 'the documentary' too.
I dont know what is thinking is by gettin outsiders to invade his space.
Another wild guess is maybe that, for these 2 singles he used other producers who can hook in new dre fans. Then the main authentic meaningful production/tracks comes from Dre on the album.
Agreed my friend......Keep hope Alive...I am.
ReplyDeleteJMac
Alex Da Kid is a gread producer but not for this song as detox number single
ReplyDeleteFor those dying to hear authentic dre produced tracks, i had posted this in the end of January but maybe some had missed it:
ReplyDeleteNew dr dre prod track: Raje - 'therapy'
http://drdre-detox.blogspot.com/2011/01/new-track-produced-by-dr-dre.html
A voting poll has also been created for this track. Look right side of page.
On a side note....has anyone heard "I don't belive you" by Slim the Mobster??? If dre had any inclination on what artist to feature next, this is the guy.......
ReplyDeleteSuperstar in the making......
JMac
yeah thats the one feat xzibit, but im sure it's prod by Nottz.
ReplyDeleteDre had mentioned before that slim the mobster was the next big thing and is writing for detox.
In the search box (top-right of this blog) search 'slim mobster' and you can read more about him.
Here are a few links to get people started:
http://drdre-detox.blogspot.com/2010/11/slim-da-mobster-writing-for-detox-and.html
http://drdre-detox.blogspot.com/2010/12/dres-protege-slim-mobster-interview.html
http://drdre-detox.blogspot.com/2010/12/another-slim-mobster-interview-ghost.html
But never know if this thing wit slim mobster gets more serious. Because the same thing was suppose to happen with Bishop Lamont.
The perfect new artist for Detox would have been the game, if detox was released in 2004. haha.
yeah thats the one feat xzibit, but im sure it's prod by Nottz.
ReplyDeleteSlim the Mobster feat Xzibit "I don't believe you" is prod by Nottz.
This is my good example that if dre doesn't contribute on a detox track then producers like Nottz can do a good job.
This is what i mean by looking ahead, IF dre doesn't provide his input.
I like Bishop, but he's no Slim.....Slim has that compton feel that Detox feel, that DIFFERENT feeling.....Ive followd Dre since NWA and I could see Slim being a star...(Check out It couldve bben you....vintage. Although I do like Bishop, DRE seemed like he went in a different direction...
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, knowing people from Em's camp (Not sure I should say this)I am hearing that the featured artists are as follows:
Snoop, Em, Game, Slim, Jay Z, Stat Quo, Lil Wayne, The Prophet (New), Busta, One 2, Akon, Joell Ortiz, La Roux (Have no idea what this is all about), Jamie Foxx, Knocturnal, Hitman, Lil Kim, Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, J Rock, Lloyd banks, 50 cent w/game on a track (just saying don't be suprised), Nas and Rico Love.....also my source said that he was trying to get cube but not sure if they ever connected..also I know Ren is on the Album but only on one intro....Now this sems like it would be great but again, I haven't heard anything and who's to say he couldn't change it all....all I know is that I don't like I need a doctor as a single so I guess we are holding are breath... I have also hear, and ahgain don't quote me on this, that Kush was promotional and that it will not be featured on the final project.
All of this from a very very very reliable source.....
But with all that siad, i am hearing I need a Doctor is the first single and with that being said I am none too pleased.
And one more tidbit before I sign off.....I need a doctor will be performed at the grammys WITH an announcement as to when the album's release date will be revealed.....as far as a date is concerned I am not going to confirm any speculation on that only to say that "I'll believe it when I see it"...
Till a later date, I'll keep checking my friend's blog.....(Uzee)
JMac
Atlast!!!! Some descent posters on this site. People who know what they are talking about! Listen up Uzee...you might learn something.
ReplyDeleteWiggle we can ALL learn from each other and remind each other. Thats why we have this comments function. : )
ReplyDeleteYou have to understand i was and am still looking a step ahead, if god forbid we dont get dre input on detox.
if any1 understands.
I wanna hear 50 cent & Game with Dre on a record a la How we do!
ReplyDeleteThat would be an awesome third single and get a lot of hype for the album!!
my guest wishlist: snoop dogg, ice cube, nate dogg, eminem, d12, xzibit, 50 cent, game.
ReplyDeletenot more. ;)
I wanna hear Ice Cube on a real gangsta Dre beat. Natural born killaz part 2!
ReplyDeleteWell count tracks like that out of the mix. Dre done messed the relationship with those writers and producers.
ReplyDeleteUZEE I know that this doesn't pertain to this topic but if you could get on you tube type in Dr. Dre 3 Kings W/Eminem Jay Z it's an 8 second clip is this a leak is there a full lenth version sounds like a Dre track it is sick Respond if you can thanks, ArtMan
ReplyDeletethe sound of hiphop has just changed for the worst now, its all dance music oriented. i dont expect the same gangster lyrical content from a man in his 40's but i was really hoping for an expanded modern version of his previous west-coast sound instead of a 'love the way you lie' replica in 'i need a dr' but at the same time, if that alex da kid sound generates enough success and hype to convince dre to release it from the lab than by all means
ReplyDeleteIn an ideal world, Detox from Dre, followed by a Doggystyle sequel by Snoop produced by Dre so the pioneers of G-funk shit bring the game full circle two decades after Chronic and Doggystyle, topped off by an Up in Smoke 2 tour. That would be a fitting send off for Dre
ReplyDeleteoooh, and an ideal detox would divide the features generationally, so start with the new school acts like bishop, slim, kendrick, have the 2nd generation with Hittman, Em, 50 and Game, followed by 1st generation with Snoop and Cube - like a tribute to Dre's longevity
ReplyDelete^^that could potentially be one track with a number of guests tribute to dre.
ReplyDeleteI need a doctor - achieves #3 in the US.
ReplyDeleteI need a doctor - achieves #1 in the US. (for westcoast backstab)
ReplyDelete
