Mannie Fresh talks workin with Dr Dre

In addition to contributing to Juvenile's upcoming album, "Rejuvenation," you've been working with Dr. Dre and Kanye West. What's that been like?

Kanye inspires me through his work ethic and his approach. He'll tell you his whole warm-up speech: "When we're doing a song, we're not doing a song just to be doing a song. We're striving for a No. 1 song." With Dr. Dre, he's a perfectionist. A lot of people ask why "Detox" is taking so long. It's because Dre is somebody that is trying to top what he's done. Will he do it? I don't know if he ever will, but I respect that he's trying to do so. You have to wait for a masterpiece.

We're all fans of Dre down South. He can park it in Atlanta and I promise you Detox would come out tomorrow.

  1. @uzee check ross twitter... Dre called ricky today... Ghostwrite?

  2. If that's true, then I'd have to believe 50 has completely burned his bridges with Dre and Interscope. When he was hot, he somehow forced Game out over some beef that barely made sense, AFTER Game resurrected WC rap with a huge debut album and was really hot himself, and now he's so invisible Dre is asking Officer Ricky to ghostwrite his shit? What a world. I was thinking 50's tirade against Interscope all these months up to the blowup a few days ago was just a lot of huffing and puffing to manipulate the media or lower expectations for his album.

Let's hope Dre didn't call Ross for anything but directions or the number to someone else. I just can't be a fan of someone who repackages hip-hop to be sold as something faker than WWE wrestling, and disrespectfully exploits the name and past of someone else (Freeway Ricky Ross) who has rehabilitated himself and is doing some positive good in his community he flooded and destroyed with crack decades ago. We know Officer Ricky is hot now but Dre always maintained he never cared about that and only sticks with the guys and talent he knows and needs. I'm betting but also hoping Ross isn't contributing to Detox.

  12. Cant believe that dre called rick ross who in my opinion is the worst rapper ever. Even Tony Yayo is better and thats saying something. Looks like dre is looking for detox to be as commercial as possible in order for the beats brand to get better recognition. As for Tom H, this is proof that detox isnt complete!

  13. Yeah man agree! Tom h would give a reliable source if he knew shit. Dre is working with Ross on detox so it's clearly not finished.

  14. "rick ross would be the worst thing that could happen to detox"

Don't think so, could be a lot worse. Dre selling out totally and having corny popstars like Justin Bieber for example.

    Drefan since 91

  15. Hopefully he just called to give him props on his mixtape or some shit. I will not buy detox if that fat fraud is on there hes done nothing good 4 hip hop and I doubt very highly that he ever will hes hot now because theres heaps of little kids that think hes amazing but give it another year and hel be nothing

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yea, he proabably just called ross just to give him a boost or something. Dre said something like this a year ago when he stated he was a fan of young money, and when someone said he was working with drake.

Bottom line nevertheless, is rick ross is a fag, and shouldn't even be allowed to say the words detox or dr. dre. Hopefully it was just an inspirational call and not a business one.

  17. I mentioned 50 but I forgot about Slim the Mobster who has his own legitimate beef with Ross for exploiting his uncle's name. We all saw the radio interview of Slim calling him out and expressing himself about it. Dre knows Slim has no tolerance for Ross and it's one thing I have to side with him on. Ross may be hot now but it can't buy respect and nobody riding on top of their hype now won't be tomorrow.

You got a guy who is nothing but wrestling character; worked as a CO, lied about it and claimed the evidence was doctored, had to admit it when the proof piled up, then tried to spin it as him being a CO gangster looking to feed his kids - except he owed a shitload of child support so he was still full of shit. It's pathetic. He tries to fool and confuse kids into thinking he was the real Ricky Ross, that he's a drug trafficking gangster turned gangsta rapper, but he's just playing a character he made up to sell records by rapping about things he never did and never was and never will be. Who respects this guy? Even if you think his music is hot, that's cool, but I'd be embarrassed to be a fan because being one contributes to the poisoning and corporate gift-wrapping of hip-hop to sell to suburban kids. When you rap about nothing real but you're doing it just for entertainment to sell CD's for major labels, what's the point anymore? IMO there's no merit or satisfaction in listening to hip-hop if it's not about real shit but only about phony ass shit from a guy who shook down inmates for a living, lied about it, and then lied again to weasel his way out of getting caught. Come on.

Freeway Ricky Ross did his time, became a model prisoner and disavowed his past, gets out of jail looking to make up for his mistakes, do positive shit for his community, but you have this fatass phony hijacking and exploiting his own name to rap about selling crack and coke. I respect Freeway Ross because that dude is real, lived the real life, tells the truth, and knows it isn't glamorous. He doesn't rap or talk about how awesome and gangsta it is like Officer Ricky because he actually lived it and took the fall to cover up the CIA's drug trafficking bullshit to very illegally fund the Contras in Nicaragua. Ross won't rap about that.

Freeway Ricky Ross is rightfully pissed to see this random ass guy try to exploit his entire life and name, but it pisses Slim off too whom Dre picked up as his new big talent. Before, Ross calling out and insulting 50 for reasons that never even made sense, just so he can piggyback on him to get his name out.

With all that rambling said, it's way too much to believe Dre is reaching out to Ross to work on Detox. IIRC Ross sort of mocked 50 and Dre by sarcastically telling Dre to give him the beats instead. Like you guys said, Dre probably just called him up to give him a co-sign on his mixtape and success, because if Ross showed his face inside an Aftermath studio then I have to believe this world will end. Bars and success aside, Ross is just way too much baggage and too many problems to make it worth it for him to write and contribute to Detox when you have two of the biggest guys on Aftermath with very legit beef against him, and even if Dre isn't about that beef shit, he still respects it otherwise Game would've never had to leave the label. We don't need no faggot ass, fake gangsta nonsense on Detox; at least, if anything, even if I'm not much of a fan, Slim the Mobster can actually claim a real gangsta past. Ross has nothing of value to offer to an album that's much better off sticking to real WC cats who know what they're talking about and rap about real things.

  21. Rick Ross wont be on detox.I believe that dre jst gave him a heads up on his mixtape which has heat. Agree with yall on TOM H however he does seem pretty confident about the announcment. Somethings stirring at aftermath and i believe that it may be announced soon. 5o Cent wanted his album oout in November, however, i believe that aftermath are holding out on Detox as it is in its last stages. This has become more clear with the popped off track. Surley that was in contention for Detox?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Popped Off was just a dope track that TI didn't want to let go and he probably asked Dre to finish it for his mixtape as a favor. Dre is pretty tight with him because he put in some work on Detox before his prison stints. It's an old news song so I don't think it has much to do with Detox, but it's a good sign to see it out.

50 is all over the place but I heard he apologized to Interscope and Iovine (again). I guess he thought they purposely leaked his track but someone convinced him it was just a "computer glitch". TBH I don't think 50 is doing anything but reaching for attention and hype, he's a master of that shit, and this whole bipolar drama over his album and vague suicide threats on Twitter definitely seems like more of his issues than anything to do with managing a release of Detox. If Detox was getting the finishing touches and pushing 50's album out of the way, then 50 wouldn't have any issue about it; he'd WANT Detox to come ASAP because it can only boost his music career and set up his own project with a big boost.

Whoever mentioned Xzibit getting a spot on Detox, I co-sign that and really hope that's the case. I caught that snippet of his upcoming project off Westwood a while ago and it sounded pretty dope. I think most of us would really dig Detox if Dre made sure it was a WC album through-and-through. I'm sure Jay and Nas will get a spot too but the other idea of Dre putting Young Money, Ross, or these other guys won't sit right with anybody. Detox needs to be by and for WC hip-hop and put us back on the map. I trust Dre knows what he's gotta do for us but we can only be positive and hope he has the inspiration and focus to finish it whenever that is. Waiting is better than not getting anything and Dre has said before he needs to be reminded how much we really want and support this album's release because I'm sure with everyone shitting on him about it, he feels like he's doing it thanklessly. Nobody has to ride his dick or anything but if the man finishes Detox, people gotta really give thanks at the end instead of taking it for granted, pirating shitty rips of it, and then flooding the internet with disappointment when all they did was hate on it the entire time. What else can we do? It's all up to him.
