T.I. Reveals What's Holding Back Detox

In Tip's perspective, the reason we have yet to see an OutKast reunion or even Dr. Dre's long-awaited Detox LP is due to the artists' own fear and concerns.

"From me speaking to Dre man I heard him being open to it, I really did. I think his concern is do the kids right now who are young and buying music care enough about an Outkast album for it to make a difference. Which is the same concern that I hear from other people that we all love and respect in this industry like Dr. Dre. I was working with Doc on "Detox" and that was his same concern. Of course we're looking at them like we have such huge admiration for them for what they've done in the past, but they are looking at themselves kind of like 'What do I mean to the young kid of today that is going out there to buy music?' That's what the struggle is." (The Urban Daily)

  1. All that matters us if it's good. What about the millions of Dr Dre fans out there who are in their 30s like myself who have been patiently waiting for years for Detox to drop. Dre's name is relevant with the headphones. If the musics good people will enjoy it and purchase it. Dre should release the music he likes and not give a shit about the critics. But how are the younger generation going to respond to anything if there isn't any music to listen in the first place. My son enjoyed Kush and I need a doctor and those songs weren't even Dre tracks. You can't get a response without releasing anything. Another lame excuse from someone who really doesn't know the truth about the albums status. I wish Dre and Aftermath would do a NO Limit take and release 10 records this tear

  2. He sitting on d fence, he can't make his mind up, has he lost perspective? Lost that raw drive? u have when young & broke but bursting with fresh tight lyrics n beats.
He tallented & respected but ppl r losin faith, gettin pissed off. cause he taken so long to release sumthin either release sumthin or don't, if its a mistake he'll learn like anythin in life, maybe its like he doin it on purpose or he knows he done it all so were does he
go from that. Maybe if he took a complete break from music & focused on sumthin else
Hed come back with somethin worth d wait. bin "detox".
This is all conjecture & I'm not presuming to know him, his state of mind or what or why d album d album not come out.
It's only an opinion, me 2cent worth.

  3. The fact is that Dre is not able to do a classic without Scott Storch and Mel-Man, he leave them like shit and tried to go to some new producers and burn his tail... And now with that Bitch Audio... Till this shit will be banned from the market, you'll never see him in the studio ;) Manthor

  4. Manthor's exactly right. Everyone's making all these excuses for dre but it comes down to him not being able to top what he's done with all those other guys. Dre's a master composer, but if he's working with mediocre material, he'll nver be able to make a classic. It's too bad Scott Storch fell off, that guy was amazing. I had some hope back a couple years ago when they caught up with Storch and he told everyone he was working on Detox, but that was over like 2 years ago and haven't heard anything since. Cocaine's a helluva drug!

  5. Until Doc is 100% satisfied, am sure we're going to hear DETOX, Dre is a man of perfection, I'll be patiently waiting even if it takes another decade!

  6. WE need to detox of this addictive (utopic) album, addictive (fake) news and focus on other artists who cares a lil' more about their fans than the width of their pockets !

Dre should take example on people like Dj Premier, that man loves HipHop and proves it !

  8. Thanks, the last thing i'm going to say is :

"I prefer the fat Dre who makes classics than the fit Dre who makes Beats"

  9. @Manthor i agree with you but don't you think dre had recorded 100's of songs with them ?
and he's keeping that songs locked up in his vault ? im not thinking dre's lack of beats is the problem her but on the other hand he is looking for lyrics and rappers as he is not too good with writing his verses .. he needs alot to make an album :)

  10. @Anonymous you're certainly right but dre want to put out something new, so you'll probably never hear this master pieces... and that's a shame.

  11. Yeah it would be great if dre gave us another classic, but i still listen to the chronic and 2001 very often and every time is like listening to them for the first time again, sheer timeless music, 2 of the greatest albums ever and not just in hip hop music but in every genre and im just happy we got that. I used to get so wound up and angry at the lack of music from dre, but the kinda music you wanna hear from him, u aint ever gonna get. Times and music have changed and i dont think anything he put out would satisfy anyone anyway, thats not to say that he doesn't have what it takes because hes more than capable, i just think it could be a betin classic right in front of your face and you wouldnt know it, he would be judged so harshly anyway and it wouldnt get a fair review, fuck, the albums not even been released and everyone hating on it, doomed to fail.

  12. We all know but sometimes forget Dre has never put out a whole record by himself. Not even close. Chronic and 2001 are timeless precisely because they were both collaborative efforts all the way, and like someone said up top, 2001 was co-produced with Mel-Man almost 100% and Storch invigorating Dre to pull out tracks like Still DRE. Those two records also had focused concepts and a musical direction that was tightened, original, and introducing something new to the genre. 2001 is gangsta rap but it's also a record permeated with a lot of dark humor. It had its concept down and Dre had the collaborative effort with Elizondo, Storch, DOC, Mel-Man, and others that made those tracks what they were.

Those guys are mostly gone now and instead Dre has subcontracted Detox entirely to a hundred other producers and artists because he's fishing. He's casting a long ass net thinking at least one or two of them, given enough time and money to pay for these sessions, will come up with some classics. It just hasn't worked out that way, because if it did, Dre would be filled to the brim with the sort of material he feels is more than good enough. There are probably a million reasons, all valid, explaining why Dre won't put out Detox, but IMO the biggest reason is because he knows he doesn't have 12 joints that are timeless fire that can jump over the bar of 2001 or Chronic. If he did, it'd be end of story, and nothing to hold him back and no excuses to cover that up. 50 said he only has what, 5-6 songs he's sticking with after god knows how long? I believed that before 50 even said it.
