Detox may only appear as EP, says 50 Cent

The most eagerly awaited album in hip-hop history might, according to Fiddy, only materialise as five or six songs

Dr Dre's Detox might only be an EP. According to a recent interview with 50 Cent, the most anticipated album in hip-hop could end up as no more than "five or six songs".

"I don't know if he's even excited to do it now," 50 Cent said in an interview in Paris. "He's successful with Jimmy [Iovine] with Beats [headphones] … I'm not sure if he's going to actually release a full CD or if he wants to just release the music that he's comfortable with. He might do an EP or something like that – five or six songs."

Dre's third solo album has been in development for more than a decade: its initial release date was in 2003. Over the years, the laundry list of collaborators has grown longer and longer, from blue-chip rappers such as Eminem, Jay-Z, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg to current kingpins including Rick Ross and Kendrick Lamar. "I see the finish line right now," Dre said in 2010. "I'm wrapping it up." But two years later, there's still no sign of the record Dre has described as his last.

As 50 Cent indicated, Detox's biggest obstacle seems to be the success of Dre's line of headphones, Beats. "Them headphones are selling, selling, selling," Ice Cube observed in March. "What would you rather sell somebody: $300 headphones or a $10 tape?"

There may be another reason for Dre's slow pace: his project The Planets. Enamoured with astronomy, the legendary producer is allegedly working on an instrumental album based on the "personality" of each celestial body. "When I did [see Dre] last, when I was in Los Angeles," 50 Cent revealed this week, "he was actually in the studio working on something else." Maybe Detox got hit by an asteroid.

  4. If those 5 or 6 songs are the greatest fucking rap songs ever made then at this point I'd be happy. But if even one of those songs sucks then its an epic fail and dosent justify a decade and a half of recording.

  5. I cannot wait for Kendrick's album to drop. Finally an Aftermath release since what 2010 Ems Recovery. As for ther remark's from 50, I think he is full of shit . Dre knows what he is doing. He is purposely not producing any songs and is saving his production talents for Detox. I think he is going to surprise us all. No matter when it gets released there will always be hype for it. I think that there was a chance of it being released a while back if it wasn't for all of the backlash from the fans from his leaks and promo singles. I really think that Dre wants to make an album that is much different than his last 2 . Dre is more grown up now and I think that fans need to accept this and cut him some slack on not releasing another gangster album. I think that he would be able to pull that off with his talents and express who he really is At this point in his career. Not hating on 50, but I don't think his album is what's gonna sell. Put Kendrick, Detox, and a new Eminem cd in the mix and you have platinum written all over it. I think the only thing that will help sell 50 would be Dre produced tracks. Sorry but 2012 is all about Kendrick. Im not happy with the way Dre has been dealing with Detox. I think that the least he could do is give us the truth in his own words on the album's status and let us know what's going on. That's the least he could do with all of the support we have given him through the years. He owes us that and I do think he owes us this record. I think any true Dre fan would enjoy it whether or not it fits the gangster image of his last 2 CDs. I just want to hear new music from Dre produced by Dre even if it isn't up to his expectations it would still get my support

  6. In my opinion... he does not feel obliged to create something that in reality is only going to be swallowed up by criticism and if its his last "15 minutes" of course hes going to save it for when he wants to use it... which clearly is not now or a decade ago... so in fairness I say cool... its not like he has got lazy and hidden away, if anything he has been more active than previous years and if that doesn't leave you content then deal with it.

  7. blah blah blah 50. I thought we established only Dre knows what's up with this album. Hope no one takes what anyone says about the album seriously.
