Chronic sales lawsuit

Dr. Dre won't be behind the microphone at a federal courthouse after all - the rapper settled a lawsuit over damages from unauthorized online sales of his album "The Chronic" a day before trial.

Attorneys for the rap superstar, whose real name is Andre Young, filed a notice of settlement in a Los Angeles federal court late Monday afternoon. He had been expected to testify during the weeklong trial, which would have decided whether Young was entitled to 100 percent of the profits from online sales of the rap album, which also helped launch the career of Snoop Dogg.

No details of the settlement, which is not yet finalized, were filed with the court.

In April a judge ruled that WIDEawake Death Row Records didn't have the proper permission to sell Young's music online or repackage it on new CD releases. The label purchased the holdings of original Death Row Records, which launched the careers of several rappers, out of bankruptcy.

He sued WIDEawake Death Row in 2010 for breach of contract, trademark infringement and misappropriation of his likeness.

Young was a co-founder of the label, but negotiated a deal to leave the company that required Death Row to obtain his permission before selling his music digitally. On Monday, "The Chronic" was no longer available for download on Apple's popular music service iTunes.

There was no immediate comment from attorneys for either Young or WIDEawake Death Row.

  1. The material so far released from Wide Awake entertainment is garbage Hopefully Dre has the quality material from the Deathrow days and someday he will release it. That whole release of the chronic relit was bullshit none of those songs match up with any of the original material on the chronic props to Dre for going after them. You can tell that when Dre skipped out of Deathrow most of the material went to shit

  2. This is super off-topic but I hope there's some green (the color) in the cover artwork for detox. I'm sick of all this red. OG Chronic was green (leaf), Chronic 2001 was that awesome green on black, I hope Dre, if you be reading this, you decide on some green.

  3. I was wondering though.... the Detox edition of Dre Beats is supposed to be released on 05/07/2011 according to HMV. Maybe that's around when Detox will be released? After all, why would they release Detox headphones without Detox album? what do u think about that Uzee?

  4. ^thats actually a good point - ideally the idea is to release the Detox products close together.

  5. I don´t understand. Haven´t the Detox edition headphones already been released in the US? In Norway, where I live, they will probably arrive in stores in late June or early July.

  6. Yea they have been released i just saw a video on youtube of someone doing an unboxing. There's actually several of them
