So after that initial call what came next on your journey to Aftermath?
We only talked for like 5 minutes and he asked if I was patient because he had a lot of things going on at the time—I think he was in the process of just working on Em’s album or something. I told him I had all the time in the world.
Was it a slow process after that?
I wasn’t signed until almost two years later.
So was it a trial process, were you in the studio with Dre and kind of feeling it out.
Yea from time to time I would be in one studio and then the other studio and that was that.
Was it a learning process for you? Working with someone like Dre isn’t an everyday occurrence.
Everything is a learning process but this was new to me so yea this was a big learning experience for me and all these things came into play later because when you’re dealing with someone as good as he is you have to learn and pay attention.
There’s no way around it, just be on your “A” game at all times, right?
Of course especially when you know he’s watching and I know he watches the [smallest] shit , like when we went out wherever and he wanted to see how I acted and how people responded to me and [vice versa] and I guess I did pretty good.
So it was like Dre wanted to get to know you as a person, as a well- rounded individual versus as just a rapper?
You know what the funniest thing is, for him to be like this big mogul but he knows everything that happens in the street and I don’t know how he knows about it. Like, how do you know that, who told you that? That’s the craziest shit to me, he knows things that are going on in the hood and it’s like where does he get this from.
That’s crazy. At any point on your Aftermath journey did you ever think ‘maybe it’s not going to work out”?
I’m going to keep it 100% real with you, and I’m probably not even supposed to say this—I make more money now than most people he’s put out for big tours.
Just off of working with Dre, you’re saying?
Yeah. Like can you imagine what Oprah gives to her friends and shit? Like c’mon man, knock it off, so I don’t know how they got frustrated. I’m not frustrated—I feel good about it, I’m comfortable, got all my little issues out the way. I’m more focused on my music, I don’t got to worry about the judges and the juries and all those people.
Dre even said in a recent interview that you and Kendrick were probably the last two artists he was going to work with ever. How does that make you feel?
I feel like a legend in the making. That’s a hell of a title, we the last, I guess they save the best for last.
Was Dre present for the whole process of recording War Music?
Nah, a lot of my recording I do on my own too. I really did this because people were wondering like can he rap? Can he do this or that so this is more for the people who really don’t know who Slim is, but there’s a lot of people who know I am and don’t appreciate the things that I’ve done.
Is there like one or two songs that are really personal to you or stand out the most that you can talk about?
Every song is personal to me but the one that’s more personal is something called “Falling Star.”
That sounds like it could have a deeper meaning?
The song is actually about me fucking up and not becoming successful like that’s what most people expect from me like ‘oh I’m surprised he even got this far.’ So I really like the song because it gives a different vibe, it’s not about guns etc. and some people say I always talk about guns but if you pay attention I’m not saying this to shit on anyone and I hope no one takes it personal but I’ve never heard Kweli compared to Jay- Z in light of, Kweli is hard, he’s good, but 9 times out of 10 when you say the greatest rapper you say someone hardcore.
Right, like Biggie, Pac, Jay…
I ask people this question and those are the names that usually come up so like when I made War Music—I wanted to keep it hard because I feel like that’s what people will really like because when you say the greatest people in hip- hop you only name hardcore artists that have an audience of people who [tend] to follow that type of music.
That’s interesting man. Do you feel like you kind of have to act, or make music a certain way to please people and give them what they want?
No, I feel like rap is not hardcore [right now] so if I was to please the people I would be doing techno- rap or something.
You’ve mentioned being Eminem being one of your favorite MCs, have you guys collaborated yet?
I mean we haven’t actually recorded together but I’ve been in the studio with him a few times and it’s heavy because he knows my shit. When I hear Em singing my songs and shit that gives me motivation. That’s someone I looked up to like I looked up to Dre so when I hear him saying like I like this song right here or when Em says this right here is my joint’ I take pride in those things.

Im going to be brutally honest with you, I wasnt aware that David Chapelle rapped. I mean i never....wait what?....this isnt DV? Oh....Slim the Gangsta or whatever hes called...anyway, i actually like the vibe on his newest song south central blues.....a nice west coast feel....mabye with Dre Production this guy may be ok....i guess stay tuned....Nice song...stupid name.....
ReplyDeleteJM
South Central Blues was thus far the only joint his guy has made that didn't make me cringe. If I could give him some advice, it would be to tone down the "Imma from the STREETS 100% gangsta" shit and focus on getting his game up instead. Cripping doesn't mean shit to me, I'm listening to your music so focus on your craft.
ReplyDeleteTo be frank this guy still doesn't impress me even with all the help he's getting, his lyricism is still noticeably weak and the whole gimmick is just flat. He may or may not have potential but that's my point: to get to that level of respect he needs to prove not just he can rap (anyone can rap with enough help and direction) but that he can bring it higher by proving his versatility in flow and lyrics. Otherwise he just stays a one-note act.
Yeah his name is really clownish, dude should really just change it now before it's too late.
"no I feel like rap ain't hardcore so if I had to please the people I would be doing tecno- rap or something" thats whats up man this nigga, dre, bay area rappers, and nas are still keepin it real.
ReplyDeletehe is a fuckin idiot....sounds like a shit version of 50 cent
ReplyDeleteslim the muppet
i tink dre should focus on kendrick lamar a guy whos got real talent slim the mobster seams played out even before his dropped a album weve heard his content a million times already people like k dot and j cole should show this guy you aint gotta be a gangster rapper to succeed people like 50 who 1000 times more talented than this guy and people sick of him what chance has slim got.....
ReplyDeleteslim has a very slim chance...
ReplyDeletedre should of kept bishop lamont on the aftermath
ReplyDeletehe was very talented ,cant understand how he never dropped an album while he was there !!tracks dre produced like grow up and no stoppin carson are great really dont get what dre sees in this guy slim the mobster hes a second rate 50cent witch is kind of worrying considering 50s career on a downward spiral
Bishop got kind of fucked on Aftermath because The Reformation was contractually prohibited from being put out before Detox. So there you go. It may explain why at the time Bishop was also working his ass off with Dre to finish Detox and being the evangelist against all the leaks since he knows leaks will set Dre back which sets him back. Then Grow Up hit the radio and proved to be an early hit but Interscope put out a cease-and-desist for the reasons above. So after 4-5 years of essentially at the whim of Dre's bullshit not finishing the record, not really intending to anytime soon with Em coming out of the woodwork and taking two albums' worth of time, and nothing to show for it in the way of one album, dude left. He left with all his Dre-produced masters and shit but god knows if Bishop even wants to use that old shit anymore.
ReplyDeleteI still fuck with Bishop though, I agree he was extremely talented, dude was real, and he had an impeccable flow but what can he do? It sucks he'll never be back on top and probably remain locked as an indie rapper for his career, that album still isn't out yet, and it's just a tremendous waste of talent. I don't remember him having any bad blood with Dre over it, I know Dre was just like "do what you gotta do, I understand", but damn man it's kind of a waste he left Aftermath even with all that bullshit because it's not like he's done anything since. I really wish I knew what was up with that, joints like "Hallelujah", "Flashy", and those other Dre-produced fireballs just went to waste but at least we got a lot of them...
Meanwhile I still find it really fucked up Slim is probably getting paid 10x more than Bishop ever did, even though Bishop was TIGHT with Dre working on Detox together, and from what I know there was a Detox version that was heavily his. "Who's Yo Daddy Bitch?!" you can look up and check out as far as Bishop-era Detox reference tracks go and it was dope. Dude dedicated years to Dre and Detox, got nothing to show for it, meanwhile Slim is bragging about how much he gets paid and his big ass house in the hills in LA for really doing nothing but redoing 50's old act, falling flat in ways we've already seen a million times over, ready to debut with all the industry help in the world too. The world is just not fair...
This nigga is some hot garbage. He has no talent whatsoever. Not sure what Dre sees in this fool. I really hope he is not all over Detox or Im gonna be very dissapointed.
ReplyDeletedre has brought us some of the best hip hop artists in the last 20 years like snoop ,em,game, xzibit ,50 , but i really cant see the talent in this guy hes rhymes arent catchy and he got no FLOW i think he should put all his effort and energy into kendrick lamar ... i saw in an interview some where that slim the mobster said he wrote 70 percent of detox I HOPE NOT !!
ReplyDeleteThe best news we could possibly hear regarding detox is if this stroke was murdered before dre had a chance to finish his work on the album forcing dre to scrap his tracks and start over. Id gladly wait another five years for detox as long as this clown wasent on it
ReplyDeleteFUCK SLIM THE MOBSTER!! DRE GOT THE SLIM THAT MATTERS RIGHT AND THATS SLIM SHADY"" SLIM THE MOBSTER WONT DROP NO ALBUM WHILE HIS ON THE AFTERMATH ALOT MORE TALENTED GUYS THAN HIM DROPPED NOTHING
ReplyDeleteAny Dre beats on war music ???
ReplyDeleteSlim Da Slobster Sucks,
ReplyDeleteDetox sucks blame that nigga OK! im tellin u dre needs GaGa on that shit and its a wrap needs to top tha c4, that shit was dirty AF
When Slim said he wrote 70% of Detox, keep in mind he also said "Detox is done" in the same interview, and this was when there were strong indications we would see it in February '10 (Dre saying he's one or two songs out before final mixing), just after Kush and INAD were put out and supposed to be on the album.
ReplyDeleteWith that said, I'm going to figure that got scrapped (again) since those two joints aren't included anymore and enough time has passed to also figure Slim's Detox is a thing of the past. So I'm not tripping that hard over it and I don't think anyone should worry that whatever Detox we get is gonna have 70% of Slim da Mobster bullshit.
To answer the above question, I've not heard of any actual Dre production on War Music, but I know there's a Dre feature. Take that as you will.
my vote is for kendrick over STM. hands down. kendrick is real and he can srsly flow. no bs approach relative to slims "i have to act hard because that is what works" bs. "oh and by the way i'm getting paid a lot now". boo.
ReplyDeleteBITCH you look like AC Green, don't callll here anymorrrrreee!!!!
ReplyDeleteface facts hes not the next big star by anymeans il be shocked if he makes any impression on the rap game at all the whole gangstet rapper thing is in decline the only on who is stayin relevent is game still droppin no 1 albums 50s career looks played out people sick of what hes got to say,so i dont see slim the mobster being nothing more than some one that leaves dre without having dropped an album and if his mixtape war musics anyting to go by i dont tink any one would want to hear his album, dre needs to produce kendrick and produce a full album for game again ,game on dre beats = FIRE
ReplyDeleteK.Dot for President
ReplyDeleteYou know what I cant believe.....I cant believe that weve wasted 20 comments on this no talent Nigger..
ReplyDeleteWhere the fuck is Detox.....Enough is Enough.
TinyTim
WTF is this?
ReplyDeletewhy all the hate?
you barely even listened to couple of his songs, his mixtape didnt even come out...
yes maybe most or all of who where signed before him where probably better than him, but we can't judge him yet.
am not comparing, but even game's and 50 cent's top hits where about the same played out shit (money, cars, clubs, bitches, gang banging etc) along with most if not all other rappers.
wait for his mixtape or maybe album (if he stays in aftermath and not leave like most of the others before him did) then maybe we can talk. Anyway, we can say whatever we want to say, the guy already made millions before doing anything really big, so hate and be jelous as you want, but he and no one else will give a fuck.
"I'd suck his dick to prove it"..wow..
ReplyDeleteI don't know how "sucking his dick" will make him a better rapper...
ReplyDeleteENOUGH OF THIS GUY HE AINT WORTH THE COMMENTS . PLEASE DRE DROP A SINGLE AND GIVE US A RELEASE DATE FOR DETOX IF IT DONT DROP THIS YEAR IT NEVER WILL THAT YOUNG WORLD BEAT SOUNDED CRAZY I KNOW HES GOT SOME AMAZING MUSIC COMING I TINK HE WAS JUST TESTING THE WATER WITH THE LEAKS SO FAR WITH DIE HARD BEING THE BEST I HEARD HE GOTTA KEEP THAT INAD SHIT MILES AWAY FROM DETOX BUT HE AINT STUPID I GOT FAITH .....
ReplyDeleteSuck his dick huh? Your an odd bird....you promote Slim the Wanksta all over twitter and now you want to suck his dick.....thats some oddball shit roght there mane.....
ReplyDeleteI just wanna hear the song "back against the wall" with Dre, hopefully its good. They rap on TI's "salute" beat which is not that good, but maybe they can make it better.
ReplyDeleteit should be against the blog rules to type in all caps. so fucking annoying.
ReplyDelete^I would agree with you but you have to give Mr Caps a pass....Hes mentally retarded.....errr....a little slow and he dosent have a good home life....So before we shred people lets take a step back and caution ourselves....Mr Caps only has this going on in his life so if it gives him Joy, then let the man drool...afterall waiting for Detox for ten years to come out is a little like him not being able to.have sexual relations with a woman..they are both probably not going to happen....and no hand jobs from mommy under the table while your drawing train tracks in the mashed potatoes doesnt exactly count.

http://www.music-news.com/shownews.asp?H=Dr.-Dre:-I-listen-to-music-outside&nItemID=44905
ReplyDeleteArticle is just an obvious commercial for his brand. Beats headphones are way overpriced commercial products with an expensive brand premium, you get a lot less hardware than what you actually pay for.
ReplyDeleteLook. Fuck all ya'll hatin ass nigga. Slim the Mobster is the bangin. The guy's got talent. Sum niggaz don't even feel K Dot. Just because he's the next Dre's protege, ya'll hatin. He's amongst the last people standing in Aftermath. I can't wait to hear WAR MUSIC. Even if it doesn't have Dre's beats. Stop payin too much attention on the beats and listen to the guy's flow!
ReplyDeleteWe've all heard this guy's flow when he was called 50 Cent - that's why people aren't blown away. He gets some credit for bringing back hardcore hip-hop (I guess) but it's not that special because it's been done before a million times over and better than he's doing it. Slim is a lot of hype, getting a shitload of help all over the place, and been in the Aftermath camp like many better rappers before him. I'll tell you this shit though, if Slim wasn't any sort of known Crip, unrelated to Freeway Ricky Ross, and didn't have any previous connect to Dre since he was a kid, he wouldn't have much else to stand on. There are a lot more factors to this guy's success than his skills and people know that.
ReplyDeleteSlim and Kendrick are one of the few left on Aftermath for a good reason, namely Dre is just plain LAZY, drops the ball almost every time he signs talent, and a lot of major label politics from Interscope are playing a much bigger role than you think. Bishop, perfect example right there. Who the fuck knows what goes on and who the fuck can tell you what that dude saw then. All I know is Bishop is some sort of fucked up ever since dedicating so much effort and years to Dre and Detox only to get nothing out of it - something happened to this guy but we'll never know. That dude was WC, total talent, heir to the Aftermath throne, but he got pushed off by Interscope or he walked away with his soul intact. Who is to give a fuck if Slim is on Aftermath? Dre wasn't even going to put Game out until 50 intervened and pushed that shit out the door! If anything that just assures predictions Slim will suffer the same fate so many other before him have long before and he's a lot less talented. Somehow I'm thinking the world will suffer a nuclear winter before Dre produces a Slim LP on Aftermath.
Not gonna argue Kendrick against Slim, those two are doing different things in different galaxies, and I know many some people aren't feeling Kendrick. I'd rather side with him though because he's doing his thing on top of his game without Dre's help and Slim is only getting anywhere with all the help in the world. I'll check out War Music for sure but everything we've gotten from it isn't living up to the hype - at all. South Central Blues, okay, kind of feeling it, but that guy needs to grow. Until then we can hate all we want, the dude is getting paid absurd amounts of money for ghostwriting shit that won't even make Detox and probably being used as Dre's protection.
about 10 years ago when 50 and game came about this guy would probably be a star and be moving units but that was 10myears ago things have changed gangster rap is dead( for the 80th time ) this guy's flow is not all that bad but its just the subject matter that is same ole If I was Dre I'd be very cautious in investing my money and time with him This guy is not going to move units look at Games, Snoops, 50s last album each failed to sell over 300,000 that's aweful . Dre needs to find "new" and better talent it's out there this guy is not going to be the next Em,50,or Snoop. And if this guy is the shit stirir and badass that he is claiming to be Hasn't Dre learned his lesson with the whole Suge and Tupac issues. I have much love for Dre been a fan since the N.W.A. years but if this is a sign of whats coming with Detox then he's going to lose my respect as a grown man These guys (Snoop and Dre) are approaching middle age If he's taking the whole gangsta approach again with this album it could come back to bite him in the ass I was pleased with the Under Pressure INAD Die Hard don't understand why he has to go the G route( DOC SNOOP 50) Stick to Em if he wants to move units there is way much better talent out ther than this Slim guy My opinion don't hate sorry UZEE you have to put up with alot of these aweful posts Peace out
ReplyDeleteDre and Aftermath should sign all the Top Dawg artists instead and skip Slim the mobster. They have a new fresh sound and they are all diverse. I'm not a huge fan Jay rock but Kendrick, Schoolboy q and Ab-soul are good.
ReplyDeleteSlim The Mobster=real wanksta
ReplyDeleteMr Chow= real gangsta
DOC just tweeted that detox will not drop this year. Also that psycho will not be on the record.. and that there will be about 12-20 tracks on detox. I think I'm done following this blog. Its the same shit over and over. Detox will come out but this whole stupid process is not worth following and getting invested in.
ReplyDelete^refrence: http://twitter.com/#!/WESTCOASTDOC
ReplyDeletei told you detox coming 2012
ReplyDeletesince when 2009?
my name was detox2012 for a reason lol
You guys joking?... Detox was supposed to drop in late '05, Dre/Bishop said it on video, imagine how long I've been going through this shit...
ReplyDeleteNobody should be surprised, I said a while ago for all the investment, promo campaigns, and hype that will come with this record from Interscope, there is just no way Detox is dropping this year so late. They're working on it but Detox is a big deal for the label, this isn't going to just pop up out of the blue, and any official news or date is going to be announced well ahead. 2011 my ass anyway, Dre started that shit over for the millionth time, no new single, no news of a single, no leaks, nothing, and you guys get upset it isn't magically appearing in two months? That shouldn't get anyone upset, it was clear as day since February this year that once Dre redoes the shit, that takes at least another year. I'm not tripping anymore, I just wish Dre would throw us a single or god forbid a halfway decent leak. I was all over the shit years ago when the GOOD leaks were popping up and that's enough to hold me over for a good while.
IM NOT BELIEVING ANYTHING THAT ANYONE SAYS ABOUT THIS RECORD UNLESS ITS COMING OUT OF DRES OR IOVINES MOUTH IM STILL KEEPING MY HOPES UP FOR A 2011 RELEASE I KNOW CHANCES ARE PRETTY SLIM BUT I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE ANYTHING ANYONE SAYS BELIOEVE ME I WANT TO BUT I HAVE TO LOOK AT THE TRACK RECORD

You have the same idea as me but I expect some Game and some hook singers (should just stick to Kobe but god knows Sly will be ALL over it) but I sure as fuck hope Dre doesn't put Drake, Wayne, or anyone hot at the moment way out of place on it. Shit was weird when all those reference leaks were TI too since he was ghostwriting so I was half-expecting he was going to make the cut years ago, but thankfully that won't happen.
ReplyDeleteIt will have a shitload of features but I really don't want variety that way, the right idea seems like it should keep it limited to the WC dudes we expect so the sound and style isn't schizophrenic and all over the place, and if Dre is micromanaging every aspect of this album there's no need to have 20 guys all over it. Dre is going to keep that shit in line with one theme and one musical concept. It would be nice to have the dudes you listed above but Dre should do Warren a big favor and just let him have something off Detox. He deserves it and he can still go these days, he was one of the original G-funk OG's even after Dre left him in the cold. This will also never happen but damn do I wish Dre kept at least one Bishop feature on it from that old Detox cut, I know in my heart they must've made some blazing shit for all the time they spent. The Flashy beat for instance was hot and WC through and through.
If Dre can throw a Nate hook on a joint with Snoop I can't complain about the years I've waited for this but I don't know if Dre wants to do that if he only has one prerecorded leftover sample to go with. An NWA reunion track at the end is the obvious way to end the album but I'm skeptical. We still have probably 6+ months but fuck it, just throw us a new song at least!
